A Bold Deadline That Will Knock Your Socks Off!

Created by: MG1986
Team: 2017-18 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 31, 2018
Published: Jan. 31, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The suggestion was made a number of times that because of the cushion the Leafs have in their division, it might be best to trade away some of their UFA rentals, work to upgrade their back-end and continue building for the future. So, with that in mind, HERE WE GO...

These deals are short and long-term building. I targeted Dvorak, specifically, because he has had success playing with Marner in the OHL. These deals also bring in a couple younger defenders and top draft picks to either trade away for upgrades or to use to continue building for the future. Also, I like Kapanen on the Leafs top line and, once the season is over, Andreas Johnsson will slot into the lineup to replace Komarov, who won't resign. Finally, the Leafs would boast some truly impressive depth down the middle NEXT season when McLeod slots into the lineup in place of Moore. He projects as a top-6, but he is fast, can win faceoffs and can kill penalties.

I think the first round pick is to much on the Arizona trade

Protected picks normally just fall back to the next season again... Not sure why any team would add a 2nd round pick as well (especially Arizona that is almost guaranteed to pick top 10 this seasons and likely next season.)

Also, like the Leafs, I am sure Arizona is high on their young players as well... 2 for 2? but I don't see them adding a 1st...

I'm with you, the protection on those picks would not result in a 2nd and a 1st - no team would want to do that. The STL-PHI deal for Schenn would protect a 2018 top-10 pick and move the 1st to 2019 + a 2019 3rd... The protection on the OTT-NSH-COL trade doesn't even give an additional pick from what I've read - OTT can keep their 2018 1st and COL gets their 2019 1st.

Not to mention it would take a miracle for Arizona to somehow pick outside the top ten this year...

I'm not too sure about the ARI deal (even if you corrected the pick protection conditions).

I think the Devils lose that trade pretty badly - Severson is 23 and has top pair potential, Mcleod will fit in really well with the Devils' young and speedy roster. You just threw at least $15M of cap hit at them for next year... so they'd have a ton of money tied up in older guys and they lost their top prospect outside the NHL and their best defender...

laugh laugh No way is Arizona surrendering their 2018 1st round pick that could be Rasmus Dahlin he alone is worth more then Nylander.

Leafs could always take back Clowe in the NJ deal. The reason why I believe Severson COULD be available is that he has now been bumped to 5th for TOI/GM among NJ defenseman and has lost powerplay time to Will Butcher. Sure, he is young and has a good contract, but I think the Devils are reasonably set on defense, they need scoring, so I have tried to provide that.

If you read the condition, they would be protected from losing their 2018 1st rounder if it was in the top-10, which it will be.

The beauty of a conditional pick is that you could tie all sorts of unique and specific conditions to it. I was just trying to be creative, but I believe that condition, or similar condition, has been used before.

Don’t see Arizona or New Jersey doing either of these deals.
