I don’t understand this comment. (No offense) why would Montreal not look for the present in a trade for pacioretty. Backstrom has at least 5-6 great years left in him. I think if this deal came to Bergevin he would drool over it.

mtl is adding youth in their roster, with all those 2018 draft picks and more to come. yes our core would be price and weber, but drouin (22), Mete (19) Scherbak (22) Galchenyuk (23) Lehkonen (22) are all part of a young core.

Can’t agree with y’all on this one being a caps fan. We’ve seen the greatness from Backstrom for so many years. And so has bergevin I’m sure. I definitely think he’d take Backstrom for just Pacioretty and Juulsen. If it’s not pacioretty it’s drouin and Juulsen and a 1st

As a Habs fan... I would say YES! Backstrom will stabilized our weakness at Center for 2 more years @ 6,7M... but as he will be UFA in 2020, I would ask for a second rd pick against Juulsen.
or I will keep Juulsen and add a 2nd pick with Pacc.

woah. pac is good. Drouin is 22. we arent trading him for a 28 year old. I love backstrom. he's imo one of the most underappreciated centers in the league. but from a caps pov, why would they trade him?

No one is questioning Backstrom's value/skill. Montreal fans are just ready for a rebuild, and we are missing far more than just a #1 center. We know we don't have the prospects/picks to save this current situation, and hope our GM sees the writing on the wall. Otherwise we are set back years after all our trade value diminishes or leaves for nothing. Pacioretty to Caps could still happen, we just want youth/picks in return.

I by any means don’t wanna trade him. However, the caps are gonna be crunched up by the cap and it’s been known that Backstrom doesn’t wanna be here anymore. The caps will take anything they can get for cap relief. I also think they wanna keep the window somewhat open for Ovi or else he’ll probly be traded too.

Bottom line is the Caps won’t make it past the 1st or 2nd round this year. So I’ve sorta come to the conclusion that a mini rebuild may be necessary. And it starts with Backstrom, Orpik, and Niskanen. Maybe even holtby to a certain extent cuz we have Samsonov coming over from Russia.

I'd give that any day of the week for Backstrom which probably means we're underpaying a little. I think you don't realize how valuable Backstrom is. You could get a kings ransom for him and i think you are selling him short big time here.

Why would we trade away even more of our non-existence prospect pool? We are getting older (Pacioretty + Juulsens AVG age compared to Backstroms age) on a team that wants to get younger, it makes no sense. We need guys like Juulsen for the AHL team as well.

You are crazy to think we shouldn't make this trade simply to dump Backstrom afterwards for way more than what we'd get for Pacioretty and Juulsen.

This doesn't take rocket science.

Backstrom >> Pacioretty in value and is only 1 year younger but signed longer.
Juulsen is not a game breaker. He's got potential to be a top 4 at best.

Backstrom alone will get more than both these guys together.

Even if MTL is rebuilding, I'd still do this. Center position is so crucial. Wingers can be picked off trees. Plus Juulsen is a RHD which we have two of our best dman already taking up those minutes in Weber and Petry and there isn't any trade for them in the foreseeable future.
