How The Offseason Should Play Out - thoughts?

Description
This is the last step of our retooling process.

If Kempny is a good fit with us, then we can sign him to a 1-year extension while Johansen finishes his development. After the 2018-19 season, Johansen takes over full-time on the third pairing.

We trade Grubauer along with Connolly to Colorado because they need a goalie of the future, and Grubauer looks to be an above average starter. We get their first round pick, which should be in the mid-teens for the return.

We stash Orpik in the minors and let him ride out the last year of his contract there. We don't need to unload him, since the cap space won't be a necessity.

I love Jay Beagle, but I think Travis Boyd can do an excellent job being our 4C next season. It'll be sad to see him go, but the time has come. If we want to resign him, we're probably looking at over $2M, and that's a lot for a 4C. I know he's probably the most effective 4C in the league, but I think it's time to give Boyd a look in that role. He's been dominant in Hershey for us, and he deserves the opportunity to stick with us.

Same thing with Barber. He's been a very productive player in Hershey, and he at least deserves a look on the fourth line. I love DSP's game, so I'd like to keep him around for another year.

It's essentially the same group that we're rolling with right now. No major shakeup is going to happen right now. The best upgrades we're going to get will come via experience. Getting Djoos and Bowey more comfortable on the backend and further developing Burakovsky, Vrana and Stephenson will make us better. While we have the cap space to bring in someone like a JVR in this scenario, I'd rather save the cap space for next offseason, when we have to pay Vrana, Stephenson, Djoos and Burakovsky.

We also have some cap flexibility if some raises are higher than I gave, notably Carlson. We can also sign a slightly cheaper backup goaltender if need be.

I cant see COL giving up a first for that mate. Maybe FLA, NYI, CGY, or PHI might, but I doubt COL will. As proven in the duchene saga, Joe Sakic thinks he's playing 4 dimensional chess

I guess it's really the same team huh. If they lose round 1 again this year do they blow it up. I think Carlsson walks personally.

When I was thinking about teams that need goalies for the future, I did think of NYI and FLA as well. Calgary isn't in the discussion because they have Smith for now, and then Tyler Parsons on the way. Philadelphia has Carter Hart taking over in two or three years, and we wouldn't trade him within the division. Florida's first rounder is going to be too high to consider warranting that return, and again, we aren't trading Grubauer within the division.

I firmly believe that Grubauer will be at the very least an average starter for another team. He has the potential to be around the top 10 IMO. I'm trying to leave all Caps bias aside, but watching him is a treat. He's won us a couple games that we had no business winning, and I can't remember him having a particularly bad start. Connolly is on pace for 20 goals this year, and while he doesn't generate a ton, he's still scoring goals. Pairing the two of them should absolutely fetch a first round pick.

I agree with most of this, especially letting Beagle go. Boyd and Barber are NHL ready players and we need to let them play.

Trading Grubey will be difficult because not a lot of teams looking right now. Don't think COL wants Grubauer just yet, but maybe.

I really really really hope Gersich signs with us.

don't understand why you would not package orpik in that colorado trade and maybe grab another very late pick along with it...stashing him in the minors will still affect the cap (see brendan smith). I do think you will need to bridge bowey for money than that, and i'd rather not bridge him if i were the caps...would not bother with lehtonen at 1.8 you can find a cheaper backup who's better...and I think you can find another top 9 winger to add to this team to make them more legit if the caps do as i suggested

I don't know about siging Lehthonen I think the plan right now is to sign Samsonov as the back up goalie.

If he's capable of the backup role, I'd love to give it to him. But I'd rather not rush him. If getting starting minutes in the AHL is what's best for him, give it to him. I just signed Lehtonen to show that we may still have the flexibility to bring in a solid backup if need be.

I know it will affect the cap still, but putting Orpik in the deal is negative value. Even though his contract is only for one more season, we'd have to either give something else or take a lesser return than this. If we stash him in the minors, we avoid the cap penalty next year by buying him out, and we have the financial ability to resign everyone and round out a roster.

Given that Bowey has only played one season with us, it'd be hard to find a long-term deal with him. It's tough to say exactly what he's worth long term, so I'd assume his camp wants a bridge. If we could do a 4 or 5 year deal around $2.75M, that'd be ideal.

Well done. Agree with giving Boyd and Barber a shot on the 4th line.
