Carolina needs help at RW and GK, Sabres need help at RHD. Botterill adds a prospect to help seal the deal. If a draft pick needs to be added, that would not spoil the deal
San Jose, this is a bit of wishful thinking.
I guess DATM was offered Hall for Ristolainen and turn it down. Well now Botterill is offering Ristolainen for Nugent-Hopkins. Botterill could use another defensive prospect and swaps Nylander to get Bear.
Pittsburgh will need to shed some cap, Botterill makes a fair trade to help the Penguins defense. Hagelin can play any line and was a penalty killer for the Penguins.
Armstrong calls Botterill and offers Barbashev for Wilson and Fasching, Doug wanted to get some playoff experience, Botterill wanted a prospect, perfect match.
Montreal wants to shed Weber’s salary and Botterill wants to shed O’Reilly. Byron and Lindgren are added to convince Botterill to make the trade, Girgensons is added to balance the players traded. This gives Buffalo a #1 RHD and a LW who can play any line and can kill penalties.
With the addition of Hagelin and Byron, Botterill adds 2 penalty killing forwards.
Salary Cap
Nine contracts expire at the end of the 2018-’19 season, Pominville, Moulson, Hagelin, Larsson, Byron, Barbashev, Rodrigues, McCabe and Ullmark. Collectively their current contracts total $18,791,667 added to the current cap space of $4,127,541 totals $24,685,875 space at the end of 2019. I do not expect to offer contracts to Moulson nor Pominville. Hagelin will sign for about his current salary ($4,000,000), Larsson ($2,500,000), Byron ($4,500,000), Barbashev, ($2,500,000), Rodrigues ($2,500,000) , McCabe ($3,500,000) and Ullmark ($3,500,000) totaling $23,000,000 still $1,685,875 under the cap presuming no increase for 2 years.
The following year, Mittelstadt, Olofsson, Smith, Bogosian, Faulk, Scandella contracts expire. The Sabres have 2 options expect Nelson. Pilut and Bear to be ready and trade Bogosian, Faulk and Scandella then give Mittelstadt an $80,000,000 eight year contract or sign one or two of the defensemen and sign Mittelstadt to a bridge contract of $5,000,000. Either option the Sabres’ sign Olofsson and Pilut to bridge deals at $7,500,000 for 3 years. This presumes no increase in the cap limit, but the Sabres will still be under the cap limit.
Line up:
I kept Larsson as the 4th line center because he is great at winning face offs with a 54.4 winning percentage. None of the other positions are set, Mittelstadt could move to center and Nugent-Hopkins to the wing. Bailey and Smith are big question marks. IMO Bailey is ready; he looked really good in his limited time playing for Buffalo. I do not know much about Smith, but he is highly rated and did well with the Amerks last year. This could a weak spot for Buffalo.
I think all the other teams say yes except Carolina.
A top pairing Dman who is captain on a friendly contract holds quite a bit of value, also Carolina are loaded on the wings already. They need a Center.

First of all thank you for taking the time to respond. I know, that is a really weak trade, I should have included at least one first. I guess I was too lazy to do that. IMO, if Botterill could these off this would be an awesome team and should be in the playoffs.

Do you have a source for the Risto/Nuge talks, or is it just what you think could happen?
I do not, I am only making up all of the trades based on what I have read are the needs of all of the teams. DATM missed the boat if Chiarelli actually offered Hall for Ristolainen. But that is not the 1st trade that DATM passed on that was totally in his favor. He probably asked for a 1st as well as he did when Chiarelli wanted Stewart.
Thank for taking the time to respond to the post. TBH, if I could get Faulk for those Guhle, Lehner, Okposo and a 1st I would still do it. but I think you are correct, Guhle should be taken out. Okposo and 1st is pretty close, Lehner with that should tip the scales. This took me some time to develop, calculating the cap, discovering trades that would strengthen the bottom 2 lines. Making sure the trades made sense for both teams. But can you imagine that defense, especially in 2 years when Dahlin has some NHL experience.
I don’t think CAR needs RWs as much as you suggest....they need a goalie and a 60+ point center. Aho is on track to fill their 1C slot after playing the last few months of the season and the World Championship at center. ROR for Faulk as a base for a trade makes more sense and I’m not sure how much Lehner would move the needle. I suspect a lot a teams would be happy for him to go into free agency without being qualified. Then they could negotiate a cheaper deal for his services. Now if you needed a cheaper middle six center, then a ROR deal with Rask and say Fleury may also be a starting point.

Thank you for taking the time to respond. You know your team better than I. I guess my research was flawed after Aho and Williams not much more, and because Williams is 35, I thought there may be interest. IMO I would do Faulk and Rask for O'Reilly, who needs to add to that. Again you know your team better than, I thought Rask may have been a partial cap relief project.
So right now they have Teuvo Teräväinen, Elias Lindholm, Justin Williams all playing down the right side. They have Martin Necas who probably start at RW and ultimately move to center. When he does, Lindholm probably goes back to RW (depending on how they look down the middle). Then they have Julian Gauthier as a RW prospect and the obvious big one, Andrei Svechnikov, should be the crown jewel of RWs, once he arrives.

Faulk is NOT a top-pair defenseman. He really isn't even top-4 on a playoff team. He's a 3RD + PP specialist.
nice work. don't think Faulk is all that impressive lately though. two rookie goalie on a bad team, gotta gotta think you need a veteran at least for one year. maybe jets give you mason and a sweetener for 7th rounder, helps Jets cap and just have mason for a year.

Thank you very much for your comments. I was looking for a RHD, because the team is loaded with LHD. I have decided to sign any UFA, most of them are either total flops, or give 3 years of decent production followed by 4 years of dead cap space. Again I appreciate the feed back very much, I will drop that trade,

I agree that Okposo+Lehner+a first should get it done, they may have to retain a bit on Okposo. I also don't know how much interest the canes would have in Guhle, they are stacked on the left side of the D. Bean can't find his way on the team and I think he is better then Guhle.
Every trade is pretty solid and could possibly happen except for the EDM trade. There is NO WAY Botts makes that trade. Nuge is a middle 6 center and Bear is a prospect no-where near the potential of Risto. It just feels like way too much to give up.

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I agree with you. BTW do you have any comment of the team?
