small trades and the cancer is gone

Created by: GMTD
Team: 2017-18 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: May 9, 2018
Published: May 9, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The defense is no better than last year. Next year we add Rasmus Dahlin and maybe Lawrence Pilut, thenOrpik can be there on ice mentor.

Rask and Larsson can win key face offs for Buffalo and center the penalty killing squad with Byron and Hagelin as their wing men, I would expect a huge improvement over last year.

Mittelstadt can be the 3rd center man if necessary, Rask if very capable as #2 in the interim.

This team has a much improved bottom 6 and the PK should be much better than last year.

Bringing in Orpik, Hagelin and Grubauer will improve the locker room leader ship culture.

The Trades:

With Nelson, Pilut, McCabe, Ristolainen, Bogosian and Dahlin I felt Buffalo could afford to trade Guhle to improve the bottom 6 and add a winning attitude to the locker room.

Simple exchange, Kane signs with the Sharks.

It appears Carolina is interested with moving Rask, I think he would be an expensive but welcome addition to the bottom 6.

NYI could use help at GK, Defense and a prospect, I am wishful thinking that they feel this is enough for Nelson.

Washington would like to make some space so they can sign Carlson. Buffalo helps them and gets an on ice mentor for our young defense core and a very good goal keeper. I know this is an expensive option, but with Olofsson, Bailey, Baptiste, Pu, Aspland and Smith, I was willing to take the chance and essentially trade Nylander for Grubauer.

Finally O'Reilly. Again my goal here was to strengthen the PK and bottom six. With this trade Botterill will have 4 picks among the first 39 in a deep draft. Montreal also adds a prospect.

The Cap:

Eichel will receive a $9,750,000 raise next year. Gorges, Johnson and Pouliot all have expiring contract totaling about $4,500,000, sufficient to offer Reinhart, Nelson's and Grubauer's 2 or 3 year bridge deals of $4,000,000 each. Nolan and Wilson could be offered modest raises and still keep the team under the cap.

The following year, Orpik, Pominville and Moulson's contracts expire providing about $15,000,000 of cap space. They will have Hagelin, Byron, Larsson, Rodrigues, Ullmark and McCabe with their salaries totaling over $10,000,000. With $25,000,000 I would imagine Botterill will be able to spread this out among his 6 players. Keep in mind I have not included any increase in the cap.

The Line:

I am not set in concrete here, I am open to suggestions.

I am off now, have fun, be nice. I think this team will do very well next year.

Probably the worst trade I've seen on here... Hagelin for Guhle!? A guy with one year left on his deal for a super young and promising defenceman?? Sorry man I can't take the rest seriously....

Guhle is not the dman you get rid of. Especially not for Hagelin. Are you insane?
Wouldn't trade nylander straight up for Gubauer let alone taking on the dump of Orpik. Nylander again isn't the winger you trade.
We can get a much better package for ROR.
Eichel goes from 925,000 to 10,000,000. a 9,075,000 raise.
There's not way Nolan should be on the roster next season. Huge waste of air.

Is this opinion from your eyes or what you read? Guhle nor Nylander have done anything to convince me they will be good in the AHL much less NHL. Opps my math messed up I am really sorry about Eichel, thanks for catching such an egregious error. Nolan is the 13th forward who do you have replacing him, I think I said you can change the roster.

BTW did you look at the team, the bottom six is amazing and the top 6 are first rate.

Guhle's Rochester stats: 50GP, 8G, 18A, 26PTS. Averaged 0.52 ppg which is very good for any ahl rookie, let alone a defenseman. The only time he has ever looked out of place in the AHL was for 4 games in the playoffs. He was one of our best defensemen this season, and if you can't see that then I don't know what to tell you. Nelson-Guhle was our best defensive pairing in the last month of the season.

Hagelin and Okposo (unless he somehow rebounds) are not first liners. Like the Rask move but don't think Carolina moves him for that little.

I also don't know why I keep seeing people give up assets for Grubauer. Sign an older goaltender in free agency to mentor Ullmark and call it a day.

So who is the cancer?
By process of elimination, I would venture to guess its OReilly?

You can’t be serious? Guhle has been an outstanding player/prospect for the organization and plays the Housley game managements looking for without trading for one. Nylander on the other hand isn’t even old enough to legally drink yet. Give him time. Guy is 20 years old. He has great offensive instincts and could easily excel going forward with the elite center group we will have for a long time to come, if your gonna deal him it shouldn’t be for those guys at the very least.

Thank you for taking the time to reply, greatly appreciated.
I can understand your outrage about trading our "top" prospects.
Did you take the time to read the Team Explanation. Buffalo has a ton of defensemen and forward prospects trading 2 that have value brings in Value. Hagelin can play any line and kills penalties a skill the Sabres did not have last year. The team was composed of losers, Hagelin is a winner, I want winners. He will help to improve the locker room atmosphere, that alone is worth giving up a prospect.

Having an on ice mentor for our defensemen is priceless, in this trade I do not see him as a negative but as opportunity to show the young players how to play and how to win. Another winning influence in the locker room.
Trading Nylander for Grubauer is an insurance policy in case Ullmark is not the answer. So I am trading one prospect for another. I would rather have two young goal tenders.

Did you happen to actually look at the team? That bottom six is awesome, Rask and Larsson will win about 55 percent of their face offs, Byron and Hagelin both were penalty killers. Last year after Kane was traded we did not have a single NHL LW this team has 2 who have 20 goal seasons on their resume and Hagelin with a season of 17. I am keeping Wilson and Nolan because they have rings. That is why Botterill traded for them!!! But the cancer did not respond as an adult and more concerned about his stats.

Did you happen to check out Okposo second half season, maybe you should before telling me he cannot play top minutes.

I will take this team because, next year with Dahlin the defense is going to great, Pilut and Olofsson may be able to join the team later in the season. I can see Bailey and Smith on the team as well. But that locker room losing mentality has to change, IMO Hagelin, Orpik, Byron, Nolan and Wilson can do that.

I am tired of losing this team is a winner. Finally, maybe Guhle and Nylander will be great, they do nor look like they have what it takes IMO.

I appreciate your will to get some great role players and winners but those can found without giving up organizational top prospects. Many can be found on the outs with former teams and even veteran FA for a much more reasonable price tag.

Thank you for your comments. I can accept Guhle is an over payment. You are also correct that often players with winning attitudes can be had from free agency (Neal is one example but I think he will be offered 7 years and that is not good for the Sabres), I think if an analysis of UFA's was completed many are total busts and the best case is often 3 to 4 good years with 3 to 4 years of dead cap (Justin Williams is a notable exception to this, but he is a winner). I am most likely over reacting to the cast of losers that DATM brought to town. I wanted to do more work on the defense but next year Dahlin will be here. If Bogosian and McCabe are healthy and Nelson can step in, I think it will be fine with Dahlin. Again thank you very much.

First of all thank you for responding to my post.
I know most Sabre fans think I am under selling O'Reilly, but is actually more than DATM gave up to get him and I thought that was too much. A side by side comparison of the two trades:
Byron, P <=> Zaderov
2018 2nd round pick (MTL) <=> 31st over all in 2015
2018 2nd round pick (CHI) >> Grigorenko
Will Bitten <=> Compher
I think I am being very realistic about this trade. I know he has term on his contract that he did not have when he signed with Buffalo, but his self pronounced bad attitude has to negate the term, so yes I will be very happy to get that return.
