Sure, I did indeed trade the 3rd overall pick... but I addressed two needs with that deal: our lack of depth at C, and our lack of talent at LD. I'm not saying that Scandella is a prototypical LD1, but he's better "now" than any other option we have. By adding a "better LD than we already have", we automatically make our d-corps better. We are also trading away from a position of depth at LW when we deal Galchenyuk. We have Pacioretty. We have Drouin. We have Byron. We have Lehkonen. We have depth at LW.
BUF would think this over, I guarantee you that. A chance to draft 1 and 3 in the same year where the top 4 players in the draft are considered NHL ready? Come on folks. Not to mention, their C position is set for a long time with Eichel/Middlestadt/Reinhart. They'll want to surround those talented players with skill in order to give them a chance to succeed. After trading away Kane, they only have 2 wingers that scored 15 goals last season (Okposo, and Pomminville). Giving them a chance to add skilled players like Galchenyuk and Zadina-or-Tkachuk gives them instant skill on the wings and producing immediate dividends. Not to mention, they will have Dahlin add to their offense too.
