Sportsnet report Tavares is "potential fit" in Wpg....could cap work?

Created by: chezyldayoff
Team: 2018-19 Winnipeg Jets
Initial Creation Date: May 29, 2018
Published: May 29, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Here is a plan where we could sign Tavares and keep as much of our core together for as long as possible.

2018-19 Offseason
1. Trade Perrault (should fetch a 2nd) and Kulikov (mid or late) for draft picks. Don't take any salary back.
2. Bridge Morrissey on a 2-3 year deal to keep AAV down.
3. Sign Trouba to a 5 or 6 year deal to keep AAV down.
4. Sign Lowry, Armia, Tanev, Morrow to shorter term deals.
5. Trade Copp for pick (use Lemieux to fill role - slightly cheaper now and for next few years)

2019-20 (will have approx 20 million in cap space)
1. Let Myers, Mason, and Chiarot walk in free agency (Poolman and Niku slide in to fill their spots)
2. Bridge Kyle Connor 2-3 year deal (2.5-3.5 mill per)
3. Use the remaining 15 million in cap space to sign Laine and Wheeler (should be able to get Wheeler on a 3 year deal and Laine on a 7-8 year deal for that $$$)
*Worst case scenario we sign Laine to 6 year deal at a lower number OR trade Ehlers if Vesa is legit

2020 or 21 Offseason
1. Buff's 7.6 million comes off the books.
2. Trade Little for picks and/or prospect
3. Use cap space to sign Connor, Morrissey and Vesa to new deals

For the next 6 years we'd have to be a Stanley Cup favourite. We'd have one of the (if not THE) most terrifying offensive depth in the NHL, a stud 1st D pair that can play in any situation) and solid goal tending. Wheeler and Little are the only players who would/may be decline but they'd won't be leaned up to be carry their lines. Wheeler could slide down the line-up and Little could move to the wing in necessary.

I honestly don't think WPG needs to go after Tavares. Doing so would cause unneeded ripple effects. Just to fit Tavares, you'd have to piss everyone else off. Its not worth it. This team is good enough to win as is. They just need some more experience and some older contracts to finish or get traded.

If Tavares took a discount to play for a contender on the other hand..... 1 year 7M deal maybe? Highly doubtful but who knows.

Better off acquiring a top 4 LD. This team is already going to be in cap hell next offseason and this will only make it worse.

You could be carrying over 3m in Performance Bonuses into 2019/20 with this roster, how does that affect the 2019 roster? Isn't is just wishful thinking that Kulikov can be traded with no cap in return? Even Perrault might be in that category.
You really think Little will be tradable in 2020/21without big retention?

Conditional 3rd. If Kuli plays in less than 75 games that 3rd is a 6th. When Kuli is healthy he is pretty good.
Perrault is one of the best possession players in the NHL. The only reason he isn't a top 6 player is because the Jets have been hitting home runs in the first round of the draft since 2011.

Agreed that final cap hit needs to be lower to account for bonuses.

I think the Jets would be better off making some roster moves to re-sign Stastny, smaller cap hit and less of a headache when Wheeler/Connor/Laine need contracts.

A couple comments....

1. I agree this team is good enough to be a legit contender without Tavares
2. I don't think that should in any way influence a decision if it were actually possible to add a player like Tavares. Golden State won the 2015 NBA championship and then added Kevin Durant. If you have chance to add a player of that talent you do it.....99% of the time. The 1% is if he is a known cancer in the room or an asshole.
3. Yeah...I realize that performance bonuses may result in a few more moves. However, I stand by the fact that if we are willing to bridge some combo of Connor, Roslo and/or Morrissey we could make it work.
4. Perrault absolutely would fetch a pick or two without $$$ coming back. His underlying numbers are awesome. Kulikov isn't a valuable asset in a trade but if he's healthy to start next year I don't think he has negative trade value - worst case scenario we attach a 4th round pick and ship him on his way.
