Thats a huge overpay for Tanev.

I saw an interesting idea where TO overpays similar to this but Vancouver retains 50% of his salary. That is an interesting idea cause TO gets the much needed cap relief and the perfect defenceman for what they need and Vancouver gets more pieces to build with and lots of future assets.

Matt Martin is already a bit of a cap dump, and this trade benefits both teams and the trade is actually fair.

It definitely is a bit of an overpay....but you have to for a RHD these days.

But not at any cost. There are some that think if a defenceman shoots right handed they are worth a 1st and the best prospect you have. Polak is a right handed defenceman and he isn't likely playing in the NHL this year.

    Tanev is not exactly Polak.
But the overpay is also to ensure the Canucks take Martin's full salary.
And this is also assuming the Leafs 1st rounder will be in the mid to late 20s.....while Vancouver's 3rd will be relatively high.

Carrack is a pretty good defenceman under 25, Bracco is a highly touted propsect (He could be a very good playmaking winger in time) and you are adding a 1st in there as well. I think that's a bit steep for Tanev since if you aren't dumping salary, he can likely be had for a decent prospect and a 2nd round pick. Something like Rosen a 1st and Martin for Tanev makes more sense and is more even. The 1st instead of a 2nd would be what you'd need to add to get Vancouver to take on Martin's salary.

I'd do the Vancouver trade, but instead of us giving you a 3rd, we retain 50% on Tanev's contract. I'd rather us not give up picks, and instead of Bracco, maybe a LW like Timashov instead.

Who cares about the 3rd, Tanev is awesome! My proposal would be something like Martin and a 1st for Tanev straight up. Or add a 3rd and a prospect like Bracco and ask Vancouver to retain half of Tanev's salary. Its a win win.

The Canucks would be smart to retain 50% of Tanev's salary for two years if it got them a better return. They won't have to worry about the cap for at least 3 years.

Minimum, Matthews is getting Eichel money. He won't be signing for less than 11 mill.
