You guys are all commenting like this trade doesn't include Lucas Johansen for Juulsen.
Here's why the Caps lose this trade so hard: Patches scored ten even strength goals last year, playing on a top line. Yes, it was a bad top line, but MTL fans have been telling us all year that it's because they lacked a true center. Galch's first interview with AZ is about how excited he is to get to play center full-time. Connolly scored eleven even strength goals this year playing on a 3rd line, or occasionally healthy scratched. Burakovsky scored ten even strength goals this year playing as a third liner and very frequent healthy scratch. Lack of icetime for these guys was imho a significant contributing factor in Trotz' departure. So the Caps are giving up two pretty good goal scorers at a combined cap hit of 4.5M for one pretty good goal scorer at a cap hit of 4.5M. Plus the guy they get is almost a decade older than Burakovsky, who is already better than him, in terms of even strength goals per minute, and should continue to develop, as Pacioretty starts getting old.
I really like Juulsen's style of play. I'm okay trading Bowey for him, due to waiver status. Bowey played about 1.6x Juulsen's total minutes last year, had 4x as many points, and blocked several more blocks, but Juulsen had a few more hits and decent possession numbers. More importantly, the Caps can send Juulsen to Hershey for two years to keep developing, and play a short term UFA in that spot, whereas Bowey likely signs a one way deal this year and might end up developing slowly if he gets shelved in the press box. With all the great UFA defensemen avalable, and all the cap space Washington has right after winning the Cup, I would be really surprised if Bowey starts this year in the Caps' top six, even though he started last year there and got more points than Haydn Fleury, among others.
Trading Johansen for Juulsen is fair value, since both are late first round pick defensemen with limited pro experience who topped out at 50 points in juniors, but it doesn't gain anything for Hershey. I think a top pair of Johansen and Juulsen could be pretty good for the Bears, and MTL, unless they're sure Weber stays healthy all year this year, might even throw in picks to get a kid who's developing into a great offensive defenseman, but also has a bit of an edge for their little pest. There is one UFA offensive RHD left this summer. Adding a pretty good one through a trade, who can learn from Weber and become great around the time that team gets good... why not?
