The Johnson Contract isn't that bad?

Created by: AlphaHockey65
Team: 2018-19 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 28, 2018
Published: Jun. 28, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
-In all honesty, 5 years is way too much for Johnson. Surely, it is to bring the AAV down to a reasonable cap hit for the Penguins.

-When the contract is up, Sid will be 35, Geno 36. Will our window still be open? Maybe. Maybe not. But the goal is to solidify our D now to win another cup within the Crosby-Malkin era.

-If Johnson plays remotely well for the first 2-3 years of this contract, the signing will not look as bad.
As for cap space, we have Hagelin ($4 million) and Brassard ($3 million) coming off the books next year, Give Guentzel his extension and maybe try to keep Hagelin at a cheaper contract.
We could live without Brassard as I highly doubt he won't get overpaid in free agency next year.

The future is looking pretty good. We have promising prospects in Bellerive, Addison, Sprong, Jarry, Hallander.

Additional Details:
Just for fun. A Skinner trade is still possible. I just don't think its worth spending that much for 1 year of Skinner. He could easily fetch $7 million in FA next year.

Skinner has one year left on his contract and isn't going to bring back anything more than that. If they don't want to move him for that type of package, then they can keep him and let him walk as a UFA.

im 100% sure that other teams can offer a much more lucrative piece for skinner.

Exactly. There is no point to overpay that much for 1 year of usage before UFA pay day

It is. We literally need him to play somewhat decent for 3 years, thats about it. The time to win is now.

Then they will probably get him. I would think the Pens offer would be something along these lines but with Jarry instead of Bellerive.

I'm sure other teams have offered more but Skinner rejected 3 trades at the draft. He has a full no move clause so he can pick where he goes. That effects his value.
I also wouldn't trade for Skinner unless a big contract is moved out as well so the Pens have the ability to resign him after next season,

the reported price for skinner ia a 1st a solid prospect and a roster player. While the canes might want more it is going to be tricky for them for many reasons.

his nmt clause combined with teams looking for a winger (LA already filled the need) combined with teams with cap space.
the FA available at wing is pretty deep this year.
1 year left with a reported ask of almost 7 million a year to resign him will change what teams offer also.
