Drives me nuts too. He is going to be a great player for a long time but the league is checked full of great players. The Toronto fanbase is so starving for talent, and has been for such a long time, since Sundin, that we all forget the rest of the league has players too.

Let's just stick with centers though.

He doesn't dominate yet. Slick hands, great shot, has the tools, but he isn't doing what McDavid is doing.

Hall, Mac, Kessel, Wheeler, Kuz and Scheifele are all not as good as Matthews, he does dominant games sometimes more impressively than McDavid, Crosby, Karlsson etc

That poor dude has seen all Leafs game plus ONE game not featuring his Leafs and he knows every player in the league...Matthews has dominant "shifts", not games. He needs to learn how to be consistant on a nightly basis. Hall Wheeler Scheifele MacKinnon are all above Matthews "right now", but probably not forever. Matthews has NEVER been as impressive as McJesus and Crosby and he surely will never be. Get a grip on reality, kid

He’s not even a Toronto fan. The only people who use “kid” as a insult are kids themselves. Matthews IS better than a number of people on this list and WILL one day be better than at least half of them. Didn’t realize a 40 goal year and then imporiving to a point pregame player was such a bad thing.

I'm still a kid in my heart, even at 31 years old ..and to answer your "40 goals isn't a bad thing" comeback, when every single one of the other players mention are improving as quickly as you or faster and putting up more points and playing more important minutes than you are, yeah it means he still has a few things to master/learn before being classified as better than these guys...nearly a PPG player lol all the others put up more than 90 pts last season and ACTUALLY contributed to the team success in the playoffs. Find better arguments to convince anyone

You know what’s hilarious? In his draft year before the leafs won the lottery everyone said he’s a franchise player. As soon as the leafs won the lottery, everyone says he’s not even a elite player. Explain that to me? Everyone loves to hate the leafs and I don’t understand it. I know have these players listed (probably more) are better than him. But some I just don’t understand. Hall is very incosistant and is a up down player. Wheeler has been a 60-75 point guy now suddenly he gets 90. Scheifele has a slight edge on Mathews (I really like Scheifele) because he’s done PPG 2 years in a row. Mackinnon came out of nowhere this year and got 97 points. Kuznetsov again, suddenly scores 83 points.

I like every single player this guy has listed but you can not deny the fact that Matthews developed his two way game this year, was on a 40+ goals 80+ point performance. His playoffs was disappointing but so was half the teams playoffs. All leaf fans want us some respect, but we can’t get that because everyone else has some personal vendetta against us.

This is the most insane comment on here. You could ask Matthews' coach and I bet he would straight up say Bergeron is better. Matthews is a great player and certainly will be better offensively than Bergeron, but that guy has never gotten the respect he deserves as being truly elite
