It's a sad state that Crosby has left his physical prime and is still a better player than McDavid in his prime.
But here is the really issue with the McDavid or Crosby argument. Crosby got to be the best with skill, hand eye coordination and the Mental aspect of the game along with a lot of hard word. He's known as a grinder, he'll get in front of the next and work below the goal.
McDavid got to be number 2 on his speed. No one will ever say of McDavid he's a grinder. At least not at this point in his career. He may never pick that aspect of the game up, as he relies on his speed way to much. Crosby will be able to play his game till he's 35 and still be a very effective player if he so chooses. Will McDavid?
Once his speed starts to taper off and the rest of the league catches up to him as the league is getting faster, his advantage will be neutralized. He'll still be a good player but no one will confuse him for being the best. I think you started to see that last year. The league gets faster and he gets neutralized. With in 5-6 years he will start to slow down, all studies show you hit your physical peek between 24-26. That's why they say player get on the wrong side of 30. You start to slow down before that, but it starts becoming really evident past 30. Even Crosby has slowed down, but because of how his game is, it's not a huge issue for him. No one can say that about McDavid. He doesn't have the same level of hand eye coordination, eye for the game, nor does he grind for the puck. You can work on his game and change it, but he will never get that level of hand eye coordination, it's natural, you either have it or you don't.
This is why many people, myself included think Mathews is actually the better of the two. He doesn't beat you with speed. He beats you with his skill and his body. His game is more inclined to last as he ages.
So would I trade Crosby for McDavid, Maybe, McDavid has probably 6-7 years left in him, but Crosby has at least 4 left in him too. And at the moment, he's still the better player. I would rather trade for Mathews.
