Could you imagine. The Sen would have to play amazing to make sure they don't let that happen. That's like when Lou traded Kurvers to Toronto for a 1st 2 years from then and it turned out to be the Lindros Sweepstakes. The Devils in the end got the third overall pick and ended up selecting that Niedermayer guy ?.

Watch Ottawa finish like 10th last and then win the lottery so Colorado gets Hughes.

PASSSSS. Sens are not getting Barrie, Jost, Kamenev, and their own 1st when they attached Ryan in a deal
Sens are screwed with the Avs own their own pick so they are not going to give them more than other teams will give them for EK and Ryan while throwing in their own 1st.

Agree with most of the posters here.

Would the Senators do Karlsson to Colorado for OTT #1 straight up? Seems like it might be beneficial to both teams.

Lol. So then it would be Matt Duchene for Hughes in a sense. Poor Ottawa. Generational talent lost.

I'd say no. Perfectly content with sitting back and watching the Sens tank and us having two first round picks in 2019, and likely a 1-4 overall. Build through the draft.

And then Ottawa would give up:

Ottawa Senators
Erik Karlsson
Kyle Turris
Shane Bowers
Andrew Hammond
2019 3rd

for

Colorado Avalanche
2 years of Matt Duchene

Ottawa has been on the losing end of so many trades but THAT would be one of the absolute worst.

What Ottawa paid for Duchene originally is irrelevant to the discussion. Sorry, but it's a sunk cost at this point. You need to maximize value NOW.

@BDAvs above said Colorado would say no. So I don't think I'm that far off.

You're welcome to think whatever you like, but the return on Karlsson is going to be a 1st rounder, a player and a prospect. There is ZERO guarantee that Ottawa's 2019 pick will be first overall. The odds are actually against it. Very strong chance it's top 10 but who the hell would give up Karlsson for the 6th overall pick in 2019; it's a horrible return.

This is a tough deal to peg because superstar defensemen at the end of their prime aren't traded very often.

If you look at comps, the best I could find is:
28 yo Shattenkirk making $4.5M to WAS: a 1st, conditional 2nd if WAS wins the cup or resigns Shattenkirk, a prospect bottom 6er and a NP; STL also retained 39% salary. the 1st was also known at that time to be out of the lottery. Only half a season of Shattenkirk.

Let's say a full season of Karlsson negates the salary retention and improves the prospect. I would imagine something like Karlsson to Tampa for 1st, 2nd, Cirelli would be closer. Or karlsson to Dallas for 1st, 2nd, Hintz.

Bottom line is no one knows what the return will be, which is probably why a deal hasn't gotten done. I have no doubt Ottawa wants what you propose, I just don't think it's being offered. And for those Ottawa fans adding Bobby Ryan's deal into the mix, the return will be even less.

To be super blunt here, people suggesting Karlsson is at the end of his prime clearly haven't watched him play the last few years. Even last season, which people kept saying was his worst, he had more p/gp than all the Norris candidates, more blocked shots than 2 of 3, a better takeaway-giveaway ratio than 2 of the 3, and more ice time than 2 of the 3. Shattenkirk is not a comparable talent, the guy has ONE SEASON over 50 points and isn't even considered a top pairing guy anymore.

But I agree that adding Bobby Ryan to the trade is a horrible, horrible idea for Ottawa, but that's kind of what they do.
