Doesn’t appear to be too much of a problem, for two seasons anyways! Good job for the Caps!

these are the exact kind of contracts that landed teams like Detroit and Chicago in a nasty spot cap wise after they won.

It's one thing to overpay your top end UFAs to keep the winning core together, but come on! the dude is an RFA coming off a 35 point season. the guy has so little leverage. Even if the GM likes him, and thinks the contract could end up becoming a steal (I very seriously doubt it), he's the exact kind of player you sign to a 'show me' contract.

All the clauses are M-NTC. Chicago had a bunch of NMC after their most recent extensions. Huge difference as I see it. The Caps have 4 of their top dmen signed for three years. The next two “worrisome” contracts will be Backstrom’s and Holtby’s in 2 years. I think they are set fairly well.

That’s about $1m per playoff cheap-shot.

I really can see your point, C4N. However, this is the defending Cup champions who were able to keep their team intact, unlike Chicago in ‘10 who lost about half their roster two weeks after winning. Then, because they paid their UFAs before their latest Cup, it forced them to move Saad in ‘15 instead of taking care of him like Washington just did with Wilson. Just saying...

Its also about 5.17 million more than the amount of playoff series wins the Blue Jackets have

That’s real astute of you to point out. I bet your math teacher is really proud of you. Why don’t you research where the Crapitals were in 1974. I was born in DC and went to Capital Center hockey games for years before you were probably even born. I toiled in front of some REALLY BAD Capitals hockey games and crowds long before I moved to Columbus and the Jackets came along. So your trash talk means nothing to this seasoned hockey fan. enjoy your moment of euphoria. I just don’t respect Wilson taking head shots for the sake of sidelining players. When you win the right way, you get respect. When you don’t. You have none. To most who know a thing about hockey, Wilson has no game until he cleans his act up.

Personally the contract is a little rich for my liking but they are able to keep a guy who helped them win a cup. It’s also not too crazy of a contract (something like 6-7mill) and also like said above is only a M-NTC instead of a NMC. Also the caps have some guys on pretty team friendly contracts(eller, orlov, kuznetsov, backstrom and even oshie) and could all probably make more now then when they signed which helps make contracts like this a bit more bearable. Also their core is locked up long term(beside holtby and backstrom) so they can just fill bottom spots with cheap vets and ELCs.

This contract guarantees that he won’t get trapped in the bottom 6 role they put him in. I personally would have loved it to be a 4 million contract but look at the results he’s had playing a top line and look at kuzy numbers w him and without. Too much criticism he might have a huge year.

But the thing I don't think you're considering is that, unless Wilson has a huge breakout season and proves that he's clearly above the rest of the field(which I don't really see happening), this contract is going to become the measuring stick for future contract negotiations. take Burakovsky for example: say he has a big season. that 3rd line with Eller really clicks, and Burakovsky ends up with say 18 goals, 45 points. not totally unrealistic given previous seasons. Now he's gonna come into negotiations and say, 'well hey, look at my track record. I've averaged about 35 points a season the last 4 years, which is much higher than what Tom wilson was doing at the time.' maybe he wants 5 now, or he's gonna go to the KHL.

and the thing is it's not just Burakovsky, It's Vrana, and Connolly or any other middle six guy. obviously their not all going to be getting crazy raises, but it could be 750k-1.25m more than maybe they should. and little things like that add up.

Welcome to the win now mode, bud!
You are right, tho...in a perfect world, championship teams can stay together, all sign friendly deals and continue to thrive.

Kuznetsov's numbers with Wilson on the ice are being overlooked by a lot of people. Definitely worth looking into for anyone interested.

People don’t wanna look at numbers. Just blindly make dumb claims
