Las Vegs Trades for Max Pacioretty

Created by: OldNYIfan

Description
Sorry -- I just don't buy the idea that a guy in the last year of his current contract is worth a player off the NHL roster, a prospect, a first-round pick and a second-round pick, which is what everybody still seems to be claiming about Max Pacioretty despite the Jeff Skinner trade. Unlike Erik Karlsson, who presumably comes with a pre-arranged extension, Pacioretty may turn out to be a rental player. IF Las Vegas wants to do a deal, this is the trade that makes sense for that team. The Golden Knights don't need to, and shouldn't, give up more.

The price for Pacioretty is not 1st, 2nd, prospect and a roster player as you mentioned but it for sure is at least 1st rounder and either NHL player or very good prospect. You are talking about the guy who hasnt got 30+ goals TWICE in 7 seasons. One of those seasons was lockout shortened season.. he is prolific sniper who was effective with player like Desharnais and last few years Danault.. imagine the damage he can get with prolific centerman..

You should be reading more comments when you claim "everyone" wants so much for a rental. Some reasonable people know the value of rentals, some others think rentals are worth their trade value with a three year contract in place.

My value for Patches is a young mid 1st round drafted player (whether prospect or roster player) + a 1st round pick.. no more no less! He's a great player and will score 30+ goals but people love to harp on the negative. Also value depends the player included as well cause if it's a solid prospect then I don't need a 1st back, would be happy with a 2nd or 3rd

I think Carolina got fleeced in their trade for Skinner. I don't know why that trade went through cause EVERY single team in the NHL could have offered that, if not more.

Also, Vegas should just keep that quantity of picks. There's nothing they are willing to give up that can get them Patches. They won't give up Glass or Tuch (and rightfully so, I wouldn't either if I were them) but in that trade I better have Theodore or Marchessault coming back then.

Yeah, I should have said "most people." See the comment after you?

I never even noted author of the original post but agree completely on your comment about trade values. Thanks for the very reasonable comments on trade values.

Ok first off people need keep things into perspective.

Skinner had a NMC, which limited the teams he could be moved to.

Pacioretty has no NMC and he is cheaper and potentially even more cheap if MTL who has cap space retains.

Skinner chose to go to Buffalo because he has that right. GM Don Waddell mentioned that Skinner's choice of where he wanted to go limited the return they could of got.

Pacioretty has 0 choice where he goes this year. Only thing he can choose is if he wants to sign an extension with that team or not.

Carolina got "pennies on the dollar" because of that major factor only. Had every team been able to throw a bid in there, there price would of been better. No doubt about it.

I don't quite understand what you're saying. In my construction, if Pacioretty turns out to be more than a rental player, the package is a first-round pick, two NHL players, a prospect and a third-round pick. Eakin slots in at #3C for Montreal. Hunt is a valuable depth defenseman who plays the right side despite being left-handed, and Montreal does not have a raft of RD's.

It’s a good point you’re making, but didn’t a trade with LA fall through because Pacioretty wouldn’t extend there?

Even if that was a rumor, high-end players have a solid amount of control in their final year before going UFA. Teams won’t pay the same price for a rental as they would for a long-term asset. MTL will only get full value here if an extension is agreed/signed with Pacioretty’s destination team (Florida, if/when Patches has his way with the process!)

I’d take that trade in an instant as Knights GM because we are competing for the playoffs as much as any other team and Patches would replace a lot of the production we lost from Perron and Neal. I’d also edit the Sens trade to include Dzingel to play that third line LW/C role with Haula. He’s a perfect fit that we can re-sign on the cheap too. Also, Glass won’t be ready for this season. That’s three pretty deadly lines:
Marchy-Karlsson-Smith
Patches-Stastny-Tuch
Haula-Dzingel-Tatar
Nosek-PEB-Reaves

All good. My comment had nothing to do with your trade.

Yes but that only fell through because LAK wanted him only if they could extend him now. Has Skinner signed an extension yet? Nope.

Buffalo didnt ask that Skinner to sign an extension before the trade happened. Thats the difference.

Any team that wants Pacioretty right now for this year only, can have him. You might not be able to resign him but any team interested in this year can have him. That wasnt the case for Skinner.

Carolina could of had a better return if Skinner didnt have an nmc.
