Does Ott have interest in this?

Created by: Garitjax
Team: 2018-19 Anaheim Ducks
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 21, 2018
Published: Aug. 21, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Leaves us with nearly 4 mil in cap space this year. Allowing for Deadline dealing there would be enough to resign Karlsson with the cap going up a bit and the pending UFA's. I'd really like not to give up the 2019 first but I don't see how that happens. Ducks would have to believe Karlsson would be willing to sign though as that is a lot to give up for 1 year.

Next season the Ducks would have 13 guys extended for about $67M with Montour moved. That means they roughly would have $15M to spend on up to 10 players. Karlsson would command at least 2/3 of that space. Unless Kesler is going on LTIR for good, highly doubtful EK is re-signed. Now if you are talking him being strictly a rental, that is another thing.

I'd be basing the next seasons roster off of this one. There is no one on this roster that will command a raise outside of Karlsson. His raise is pretty much built into this roster with the left over cap space. 6.5+3.8=10.3. The cap likely goes up by 2-4 mil again. So if we replace the UFA's with similar priced players Its seems pretty reasonable to me. Pettersson, Larson Welinski, Steel, Terry are all under a mill and can start stepping into the roster around these prices and when they need new deals players like Eaves and Cogs and Perry are coming off the books.

That might be a lot to give up for one year of someone else, but not Erik Karlsson. Ottawa gets ripped off if EK65 signs an extension.

I disagree, this seems like a fair deal to me. These teams can all just wait and throw Karlsson money next season and Ottawa gets nothing. This to me seems like what Ottawa needs slightly younger players that are working towards their prime, with the exception of silfverberg. It’s time to rebuild in Ottawa. Maybe another pick?

Finally someone says it.

Everyone keeps saying, "this isn't enough" or "this isn't fair value for Karlsson". Well Ottawa cant afford to get nothing. So maybe they take their roster play, prospect and pick and call it a day. Karlsson knows he is apart of a business he is going to keep all options open when it comes to resigning or getting trade. A smart man would make the team believe he is willing to resign to increase his value to the team and potentially force their hand into acquiring players to play with that star. Karlsson is playing this right, its Ottawa that isn't.

As a Sens fan, I really think this is very fair value for the Sens and a reasonable price for the Ducks to pay. The Sens could then flip Silfverberg out at the deadline for more prospects/picks as his deal expires after this year. Ritchie and Tkachuk would make their top lines tough to play against. I also think Ottawa ships EK65 to the west so he can only destroy them twice a year

The other alternative to EK resigning, if Perry doesnt do what he needs to do this season, the Ducks could buy him out and save some cap. I know if year 2, he would count for like 6 mil, but that is still a savings compared to what he makes. So that could give the ducks nealry $30 mil in 19/20 and a little less in 20/21 when the buy out cap hits hard for one season.

Actually you're right. I had forgotten about Gibby's Raise. We'd probably be about 4 mill short of where we would want to be. They could try and move Perry, Eaves or Cogs but I dont think its generally BMs MO to put himself in a situation where he has to trade players to make room as its a tough negotiating spot.

the only time I have seen that happen in my years as a Ducks fan (since day one) is when they Ducks traded Andy Mac to the Blues for Doug Weight. but that was to free ups "next year" space when Niedermayer and Selanne decided to come out of retirement in 08. But Bob Murray doesnt have it in him to make these types of deals. Took Brian Burke to get Pronger.

Also, Henrique’s extension. Like I said, if Kesler can’t play anymore, that could free up some injury relief space as well. Time will tell, hey?!
