Better Blueline - Keep Big 3

Description
The 2019-20 season is the big cap crunch for Toronto. With Marleau still on the team, it's going to be tough to keep the big 3 (Matthews, Marner, Nylander) while trying to improve the defence in any way.

There's lots of talk about moving Nylander, moving Marleau, or not re-signing Gardiner to get around that. Here's an example that could work while keeping the Big 3 and making a small addition to the blueline. The exact price of Bogo in the trade can be adjusted as needed. There's some wiggle room for the retention or the pick going back to be negotiated.

It is possible to keep the forwards (at a fair price to them), extend Gardiner, add to the blueline, and still not jettison Marleau.

Well, sure it's possible when you use a short roster. You have no depth. What happens if there's a minor injury?

Zero chance Matthews signs for less than JT.

Well sure, it's real easy when literally everyone takes a discount. That won't happen though.

Also, I'm pretty sure the second the leafs signed tavares it stopped being the big three.

I think you've underpaid some of those RFAs, gee they are making less than they make this season, Gotta believe in reality that Gardiner is gone....he's unaffordable.

I'm not so sure Matthews gets the same or more than Tavares. It's RFA vs UFA contracts. UFAs are always more expensive. Matthews might get more, but we don't know that yet. And even if he did get 11, that just eats up almost exactly the 1 million in cap space I had left over. So it's not a back breaker here. Point remains that ditching Gardiner or Marleau isn't required to make it through the 2019-20 season.

And I certainly don't think Marner or Nylander took discounts in this. Not with comparables like Ehlers at 6, Pastrnak at 6.6, and Gaudreau at 6.7 million. Those extensions are about right, in my opinion.

First off, the cap has gone up since those contracts were signed. 7 million is logical for Nylander. As for Matthews, I think the number is 12. Entry level 40 goal scorers don't grow on trees. He'll certainly get more than Eichel, and I would think it would be considerably. Just under McDavid, seeing as how their a year apart seems fair to me.

Ehlers and Pastrnak contracts are only a year old. Cap has gone up 4.5 million since then, how much higher should one players contract be after that? I already have Nylader and Marner making about half a million higher than those guys.

And Gaudreau had a point per game, 30 goal season before his extension. Have Marner or Nylander done that? No, they've been around 20+ ish goals and 60-70 points.

Matthews makes more than tavares out of his elc, gms apparently are giving star players cap % now not actually paying based on comparable contracts... the cap will go up next year which in turn makes Matthew's salary go up even if he were to get the same % as tavarez... also bogosian is worth more than a 3rd especially if salary is retained

Darren D from TSN just reported that he has been told the Mathews contract is hovering near McDavid money. So safe to say he is going to sign for more then 10 million.

Let's say the cap next year is $83M. You've got $3M under that, but you have to ice two more players, so there goes a little under $2M. Then you're a million short on Matthews and Kapanen each (at least) and you're paying Johnsson and Lindholm LESS than they're making this year. If they have decent years in 2018-2019, you'll have to give them at least qualifying offers, and probably raises; if not, why sign them at all? And there's Ozhiganov to consider, as well as the option of retaining Carrick. No, palhal is indisputably correct: there's no intelligent way to keep Gardiner, especially if you want to acquire Bogosian.
