I’m glad to see my idea creating so much dialogue.
Jake Gardiner is not a top pair d man, we all know this, but he is a good #2 for a number of reason. He plays the PP, has great 5v5 numbers and has puck moving abilities. That package is a desirable asset that any team would love to add. Gardiner is the perfect case of eye test vs analytics I think because his defensive lapses are so bold and easy for everyone to remember but his analytics side says he’s a very good defender. Over the past three seasons he has a positive goal differential of 26 which ranks 23 among d men that have played minimum 1000min. That’s right behind John Carlson and ahead of Roman josi, Colton payarko and Dustin byfuglien. That’s some pretty good company if you ask me and all guys people would consider top pair d men. It’s easy to pile on Gardiner because of his defensive lapses and he plays for the leafs but his numbers suggest he is a very good d man and as such would have lots of value
