A Non-Toronto Fan Nylander Trade

Created by: twodollarlobster
Team: 2018-19 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 27, 2018
Published: Sep. 27, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I have been listening to a lot of people get worried about Nylander not playing. I'm not a fan of Toronto or Minnesota. I just think this trade might make sense for both teams. But what do I know.

The Leafs need some solid defense with the contract that they offered to Nylander and with Parise not producing and Staal getting old, they could benefit from a dynamic goal scorer.

I don't know if anyone has thought of this before, just a thought.

This looks pretty solid for both teams. Especially is Toronto can't come to terms with Nylander

I know a lot of Leaf fans will hate this, but honestly. Yeah, why not.

I'm a Leaf fan but I not worried about Nylander not playing. So tell me what contract is he going to sign with Minni? So, by trading Nylander aren't you telling future Leaf RFAs, "can't come to a agreement with us, we'll trade you so you can get a little more money elsewhere." For that reason Nylander isn't being traded.
PS. It might be a fair trade, but that's not the point.

It actually makes sense. I like it.

Bot teams would definately benefit from this trade.

It's not that the deal is bad. I just think Josh Manson provides the Leafs more of what they lack and need. Dumba offers a lot of the same things that the Leafs already have in Reilly and Gardiner. Scoring is clearly not the issue and although Dumba has improved his 200-foot game, his defensive prowess is still a work in progress.

I think thats exactly whats going on right now. Keeping Nylander salary down this year means they can do it to marner and Mathews coming up. Pushing the take a bit less for the team to stay together is the company line and it started with tavares taking less in toronto than going to san jose

Pretty solid trade although I wouldn't call a guy who has posted two 20 goal seasons a dynamic goalscorer, he's more of a playmaker when he shows up.

No, I don't think the Leafs are keeping his salary down. But all 31 teams can't let their RFAs have free reign to negotiate with other teams because for sure some team is going to offer more. That's for UFA, not RFAs.
Leafs or any team are no under contractual obligation to offer their RFAs maximum $$$$ or term which the player might get if he was UFA.

Minnesota has $10.8 million to sign 7 more players next year, Where do you think they will come up with the $8 million or so that Nylander is seeking?

I think the message you send is a good one.. It says don't be greedy and we want team players here. Nobody wants to get traded from Toronto.

Thanks. I'm disappointed so many hockey fans can't see the bigger picture. Most posts are about trading value and not much more. Plus in the proposed trade, it sure looks like Minni has overpaid (salary) for parachuting in a player, cause it would be an overpay to outbid the Leafs.
