I don't like any piece of this proposed deal, but how do you propose the Leafs get a young top D?
Now that we are drafting late, it's going to take 10 years for the Leafs to draft another Rielly or Kaberle, probably longer for a defensive D because the scouting staff don't even know what that looks like.
Manson might be obtainable in Anaheim, but it would, at minimum require the Leafs to somehow offer the Ducks some cap relief. I believe the Leafs could do Nylander 1-for-1 with the Blues for Parayko, though I know there are a lot of doubters out there. With the start to the year they are having, the Leafs might be able to get creative with Edmonton and acquire a bunch of different, including Evan Bouchard, a young RH D, might that would most likely require the Leafs to take back some salary. The Leafs could target Colin Miller (plus plus, obviously) in Vegas, though with Schmidt out with a suspension, they'd likely need an additional piece to fill spots.
There are pieces out there. The problem is, it's still a young season and teams have plenty of time to turn things around internally before they start making mad trades. Saturday's game against Washington will really be the Leafs first true test of the year (though they lost a stinker in Ottawa already), and will definitely show whether or not the Leafs have significant holes and how big those holes are. There is nothing like battling the reign the Stanley Cup champs to measure the current state of your own team.
