If Edmonton ever wanted to trade McDavid, TO is the obvious trade partner. But Marner wouldn't be the guy going back it would be Matthews and a 1st and I think that would be the trade.

I won't say the one you proposed is a bad trade because McDavid will cost way too much. In this Trade TO gets McDavid, Edmonton get's a potential Norris candidate, a highly touted RHD with massive upside and Mitch Marner who may already be one of the best right wingers in the game and a 1st round. That is likely what it would take to get McDavid and I am not sure Toronto is actually a better team after the trade. That is the blessing and the curse of having a generational talent. If you have him, its fantastic but if you ever need to move him, its almost impossible. The cost to acquire almost makes it a prohibitive move.
