I like Doughty but that's too much to give up for me, given that he'll be 29 (with a lotta mileage) when his BIG $$$ extension kicks in 11m x 8yrs.

Just having prime doughty for the next 4 years makes it all worth it in my opinion. Almost guarantees a cup.

Prime Doughty was 3 years ago. His best hockey is behind him and his contract is terrible.

3 players short, puts you over the cap, and that’s if it goes to 83. 82 is the number the league has mentioned.

This looks like a trade Brian Burke would make lol. Trading away young players and draft picks that will turn into future stars down the road. This is the kind of stuff that has haunted the Leafs for many many years. Doughty has a bad contract and is going to be on the decline soon so this deal is def is not worth it for them. Leafs are better off keeping Liljergen, Nylander and the draft picks to keep their program moving along. Liljegren will likely end up being a top end dman at some point while Nylander has an incredible skill set that could see him as an 80+ point player.

What do you base that on? He was second in Norris voting last year! Pretty sure he's still in his prime.

Fair comparison, however I would argue the impact of Doughty over the guys Burke traded for is considerably greater.

Right. So the scenario is basically impossible with old saggy bag Marleau's deal. Thanks for the comment

He's still great, no doubt about it, but at 29 he's leaving his prime. Players are not what they were in their 30's. This is a fact that really can't be argued. Look at Crosby, sure he's still amazing but is he the dominant force he was at 26? Not really. All players age and decline its just a fact of life. Doughty will be surpassed by younger guys who are peaking and every year he'll take a step backwards. Time catches up to us all and if you have a 8 year deal paying you 11 mill a season that stars a few months before you turn 30, you are going to be a cap killer in the very near future.

definitely would hurt in the later years, no doubt. That might be after 3 cups though! Anyway, will never happen regardless.
