Btw defensively Backes is better than Loui. Backes has finished top 5 in Selke voting 4 times in his career and runner up once. Loui had never finished better than 23rd in selke voting.
Ask a GM who they rather have and majority (if not all) are taking Backes.
Backes was better defensively. Eriksson was used as a top line scorer for most of his career and didn't play a defensive role at all until he met Green. If you can't play well defensively on Vancouver, you won't get ice time. So Eriksson had to adapt. Here's a defensive/offensive comparison between the two this year to date.
