Kap Tanev TDL

Created by: SP17
Team: 2018-19 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 11, 2019
Published: Jan. 11, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Gives Toronto a very reliable top 4 right hand dman for both this years playoff run and all of next year at only $2.25M cap hit. Type of dman Babcock would probably trust. Also aligns with Dubas' comments stating he would prefer to get a player thats not a pure rental if he makes a trade at the deadline.

As much as I like Kapanen the leafs have plenty of scoring throughout the lineup and he will be difficult to sign with the other players up for contracts this offseason.

Kapanen would fit in nicely with the Canucks top 6 forward group.

The third round pick is because Vancouver retains half of Tanev's salary. (Could vary between a 2nd and a 4th round pick)

I feel like we'd even add Goldobin to this trade.

So its a done deal?? Please! Tanev would be amazing for Leafs (he is great and moves the puck well) and Kapanen would be Horvat's RW. What if it is one for one Kappy for Tanev?

This is a huge overpay. Tanev has fallen off a cliff and is always injured. I can never understand why people over value him so much.

He is one of the better shutdown stay at home defenders and moves the puck well. He would be really good in Leafs uniform. Tanev at 2.25? Cmon everybody would take it.

dude. his ADV stats have fallen of a cliff, as have his normal stats. He cant skate, shut down lines, move the puck or anything any more. That and he is always injured. You aren't getting the player you think they are.

I think one for one Tavenv for Kapanen is fair but if Vancouver is going to retain salary which would benefit the leafs greatly I think they would want to get a pick in return.

If they added Goldobin they would probably want at least another pick. Probably better off moving Goldobin in a seperate deal as I think the leafs would also prefer a more defensively reliable or energy forward for the playoffs.

I disagree that it is a huge overpay but I think you could get Tanev for a different package. Throw a 2nd and Bracco and I think the Canucks would still retain half the salary. As for your statement of Tanev falling off a cliff, that is entirely not true, he's about as consistent as they come. Yeah he gets banged up from time to time but that happens to physical shut down guys at times. He's not had many repeat injuries which is generally the sign of a injury prone guy. Like when Gaborik missed time every year because of a sports hernia issue.

Look at the stats. He cannot prevent shots anymore, which is the #1 reason the Leafs would want him. He HAS fallen off a cliff. GMs have recognized this. Izerman offered dotchin for Tanev 1-for-1, the Leafs offered a similar package. He is worth nothing

This. Why trade for a player who is injury prone; we've run into this before with players like Lupul and Robidas ect...why continue down this path.

Athletic doesn't really understand the whole picture. They use advanced stats in a team game to single out players who are falling victim to a terrible team. Vancouver sucks defensively, that'll hurt anyones advance stats.

He definitely has struggled at times this year but his recent play has been much better. It's only a 2 year commitment at $2.25M and if he is healthy he can eat up valuable minutes in the playoffs especially. The leafs will not win with Hainesy and Zaitsev having to eat the minutes on the right side all playoffs. Perhaps playing with more skilled players and a stronger system benefits Tanev in transition and breakouts. Dmen do not come cheap and as nice as it would be to get someone like Pesce from Carolina the price will be substantially higher.

He was fine on bad van teams before. This year and the end of last he was starting to fall, this year he has totally fallen off. Read the damn thing before you say they don't know what they are talking about.
Also ADV stats normalize to account for individual contributions.

I'd be fine getting Tanev.
Not for anything near this value.

If its going to be Bracco + then you need to make that pick a 1st for retention. Kap is a Proven NHLer something the canucks need, not another AHL guy.

He is not a top pair guy anymore. Yzerman offered dotchin for Tanev 1 for 1 and the leafs offered a similar deal. No one thinks he has any value.

Why?

His stats have fallen. Both normal and adv. He is not the player people think he is anymore. He can't skate, is always injured, can't suppress shots, can't stop entries, can't exit etc.

Absolutely. There's no way that the Canucks turn that down. In fact, if you send us Zaitsev, Kapanen, and a lower pick we'd take it.

Vancouver can't prevent shots, that isn't something one guy can change. Preventing shots is a team swarming in the defensive zone thing. It isn't one player makes it impossible for people to shoot. And shots against as a metric in determining defensive prowess is just wrong. All shots are not equal, otherwise TO wouldn't be in the top 5 in goals against.

He is a top pairing RHD for Vancouver. Vancouver also didn't accept those deals. He obviously has value for Vancouver. So once again, why would Vancouver trade THEIR top pairing RHD for anything less?

You make it seem like these guys grow on trees.

Shot suppression is an adv stat that normalizes to isolate an individual players contribution towards shot suppression. Tanev cannot suppress shots as well as last year, which was a huge fall off from the rest of his career on its own.

I think the fact that other GM's think he is worth nothing is why Benning re-signed him instead of trading last year. There are players around the league who are more valuable on their team then their trade value would bring back, so they aren't moved. You are right that van would not want to trade him for what is offered, problem is they won't get many offers that are much better than those offers. So he will die a Canuck.

Good chance the leafs would rather keep Bracco if they think he will be NHL ready next year too just for salary cap reasons. Not that they wouldn't love to keep Kapanen
