I always thought this Gardiner trade made sense

Created by: noobmaster69
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 27, 2019
Published: Jan. 27, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Yah Petry is a little older but not by much, just a couple years. Gards paired with Weber would allow him to play the more offensive game he wants to. MTL is weak on the left side, ditto for TML on the right, why wouldn't they just wait to he is a UFA? Well this trade comes with an extension in place or obviously no going to happen. And I believe this trade helps MTL just as much as the Leafs, and MTL wants to make the playoffs.

Habs don’t even listen. Petry has more term, is slightly better offensively, and WAY better defensively. 0/5 stars.

Oh man, Habs fans are gonna rip into you... ?
Not keeping Zaitsev for the playoffs or is that trade once the playoffs are done?

Once they are done, assuming they have the cap to do so

Gardiner is going to be over $6 million next year, Petry is cheaper and can be accommodated for the expansion draft.

The Devils have more then enough cap space to take Zaitsev if they want him, Vatanen and Severson are RHD in their top 4 already so might not be interested.

Habs fans always badly overvalue their players, so they will hate this.

I wouldn't do the trade as I'd just rather keep gards (devil you know), and there is also no such thing as a negotiation for an extension with another team mid season.

I also just think there are better places to look

Petry would most likely be cheaper though, and not with a ridiculous amount of years left.

I said slightly because I’m not going to completely overvalue this season. But Petry already has 13 more points than Gardiner on a team that has nowhere near the quality of offensive players as the leafs. He’s a perfect #2 defenseman offensively and defensively, who can pass well, skate well, and has a bomb of a slapshot. Meanwhile Gardiner has the offense of a 2, but his defensive play is better suited as a #4 defenseman.

MTL can simply wait and sign Gardiner this summer!
Petry + Lehko (6M) for Gardiner UFA (will need to convince him to sign with MTL 5x6M) & Nylander 6,7M next year = 13M... 7M in savinf for Toronto Cap hell!
