Why trade 4th overall for Mcdonagh?

The report was in the 2016 draft, Edmonton had a deal to move the 4th overall pick (Puljujarvi) for McDonagh. Had they done this, they would not have traded Hall. This was just a hypothetical based on this report.

Oilers would not have drafted Eberle at 22 as that was part of the Pronger trade. Then the Oilers would not have traded for Strome then Spooner.

The Oilers would have had Justin Schultz as that was on pick that was given up for the Dustin Penner signing. Along with drafting Schultz, they would have drafted Jake Gardiner (Anaheim moves that pick in another trade), also Penner signing. They had to make a deal with NYI to get back their 3rd round pick which was sent to Anaheim and that was used to select Tyler Myers.

The pick that Edmonton sent to NYI turned out to be Travis Hamonic, which later was traded to Calgary for draft picks. The most notable draft pick that NYI received was Noah Dobson.

So imagine a defense core of

Jake Gardiner-Justin Schultz
Oscar Klefbom-Tyler Myers
Darnell Nurse-Travis Hamonic

With Bear, Jones, Bouchard and Dobson waiting in the wings.

It is crazy to see what they could've been, what a mess Chiarelli and others (Nicholson, Lowe, etc) have made of this roster.

Klefbom was acquired from the 1st pick they got from Penner, so that hypothetical is a no-go.

Chiarelli was only hired after they won the McDavid lottery. So all of this is post-Draisaitl and McDavid. Unless you were replying to the guy's hypothetical about keeping the 2006 roster the same, in which case I would agree that it would be very unlikely to even have the same players, since so much of the past would have been changed.

Well, you see, this hypothetical could have legitimately happened. It's entirely based on not making stupid moves they did and going off a confirmed report today (4 for McDonagh). There is no world where Chiasson for Kane and Toews could happen. So your sarcasm falls a bit flat.
