Reasonable Deadline Moves

Created by: lampshadey20
Team: 2018-19 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 8, 2019
Published: Feb. 8, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Don't expect all of these to happen (don't expect much at all really, given Holland's asking prices), but I think they're logical and (to me) seem pretty fair for the teams involved.
Trades
1.
DET
  1. 2019 1st round pick (NSH)
Additional Details:
Dante Fabbro
NSH
  1. Nyquist, Gustav
  2. 2019 2nd round pick (NYI)
Additional Details:
Gives NSH a legit top 6 forward, DET moves up 20ish spots in the draft and gets a prospect NSH doesn't really need given their current defense and pipeline.
2.
DET
  1. Petrovic, Alex
  2. 2020 3rd round pick (EDM)
EDM
  1. Jensen, Nick
Additional Details:
Petrovic only coming back for salary purposes, gives EDM an upgrade at defense and additional cap room to make more moves.
3.
SJS
  1. Howard, Jimmy ($2,645,833 retained)
  2. 2019 5th round pick (CBJ)
Additional Details:
Gives SJS a legit goalie for the playoffs while Martin Jones figures himself out - Dell coming back gets rid of that contract for SJS. Roy is a decent defensive prospect who's been hurt and made expendable by the drafting of Merkley, SJS doesn't lose any more draft picks and retains its top prospects, while upgrading its roster for a Cup run.

Current thinking is Fabbro might walk in UFA due to the defensive powerhouse Nashville has. Might not seem like that big of a deal for Nashville. Maybe change it to a conditional second. Something crazy like 2nd becomes a 2020 first if Fabbro won't sign by X date and in such a circumstance rights to negotiate with Fabbro revert to Nashville.

Detroit gives Edmonton Jensen and takes a player only to give Edmonton more cap space for a 3rd pick? Detroit is better off keeping Jensen. Maybe with a 2nd or a 1st.

I figure their top 4 is pretty much set for the foreseeable future, and they've got some other defensive prospects that project as solid players so they don't need him. I think a decent prospect that they don't have a ton of room for and 20 spots in the draft is pretty reasonable to get a legit scoring winger, considering the rumored prices on Panarin/Stone/Simmons/Duchene.

Interesting Sharks deal but I don't think Doug Wilson goes hunting for a goalie at the deadline this year. Jones has been madly inconsistent this year but his past playoff performances are enough to temper those insecurities. In my opinion, Sharks add either a winger (i.e Nyquist from DET, or Zuccarello from NYR) or a 4C like Glendening.

What you are asking NSH to give up is a lot for Nyquist IMO, too. Look at the Evander Kane trade last year for example. That 1st rd pick SJ gave up was conditional on Kane signing a long-term extension. They also packaged a 2020 4th Rd pick and a C- prospect in Danny O'Regan for a pretty comparable player to Nyquist skill-wise and 2 years younger. The price is going to need to come down on Nyquist for a deal to get done.

The whole thing there is that they'd be getting back NYI's 2nd rounder, which will probably be in the late 40's/early 50's. Since Nashville's 1st is likely going to be in the tail end of the 1st, they'd really just be moving a round back. Maybe the trade is Fabbro and a 2nd for Nyquist and a 3rd, and if the Preds make the WCF those move up to Fabbro and a 1st for Nyquist and a 2nd. I don't think this happens regardless, but if it's true that Fabbro could potentially go the Jimmy Vesey route and not sign with the Preds then maybe there's a little more incentive to move him while his value is still high.

The Sharks situation is fascinating to me. It sounds like Karlsson is enjoying his time there and seems like he'll re-sign, but if there are doubts about him coming back it would be brutal to lose arguably their best Cup shot because of Jones. Jones being signed for another 5 years complicates things too, because bringing in outside help will likely affect Jones' confidence; and if he doesn't get back to form that contract becomes an albatross. Like I said I don't think any of these actually happen, but the Sharks deal in particular I thought was interesting.
