Oilers wouldn't want a first that late... they might do it if it's a 2020 first but imo there's no reason to sell their best defensive defenseman

Ok that wouldn’t be a problem for the leafs but oilers do want to dump him because his cap and he really hasn’t shown that he can be the defence man they want him to be

coming from a critical oilers fan he hasn't been the best, but he's still one of the best defensive defensemen in the league. his cap isnt an issue, 4m for him isn't an overpayment

Interesting trade with Colorado. A lot of risk though, Barrie could ask for big money on his next contract, and if he leaves in free agency that trade would be catastrophic.

There’s risk with every trade but I feel he is not worth more than $6.5 so even if he does ask for that the marleau contract will be up and the cap will probably rise to about 86-87 million so we should have cap space and Nieto can help us maintain a good third line while keeping it young and you can’t lie our defence would look a lot better like this and our forward group could still be a force to reckon with so this team may be better than this years

That’s a fair point. I just personally think he’s going to be asking for a lot more than 6.5 million. He put up 57 points last season, and he’s on pace for more than 60 this season. I think He’ll probably get the same deal as John Carlsson, 8 years at 8 million. He’s not as well rounded or nearly as good defensively as Carlsson, but with cap inflation and a shortage of Right handed top pairing dmen, I think 8x8 is what he’ll get

We've got Rosen and Borgman ready to graduate, Liljegren and Sandin on the way.

You've absolutely destroyed our forward depth (you've made two 4th lines) by loading up on defence when it's more or less a one year problem.

Les just assume next year matthews, Tavares and Marner each get about 90 points (270 points) with marleau, Kapanen and johnsson getting 40 each (120 points) and each of the third and fourth line guys get about 20 points each with nieto getting 30 (5 guys getting 20=100 points + Nietos 30 = 130 points) all of that combined would be 520 points excluding the defence so don’t start saying our offence is destroyed Remember yes this is just assuming but Tavares and Marner projected 90+ points and matthews about 70 even after missing a lot of time and kapanen and johnsson each about 45 points my assumptions are really close

Hyman has more value to the leafs than that.
He's not going anywhere.

I'm not sure Barrie is the kind of d man we need.

You can’t lie though our defence looks a lot better than this year if this were to happen

If we are trading Nylander, I want high end pick and prospects not a D that is ufa at the end of the year.

Nylander for Barrie is non starter IMO.

It wouldn’t be hard to resign him marleau contract is up and the cap will probably go up another 3-4 million

As an Islanders fan I would take Hyman off your hands for a 3rd.

Marleau is pretty awful today, I'm not assuming Tavares and Marner get 90 pts with him, especially considering any time his played with them this season, he's played his worse hockey.

Matthews line looks alright, but I'd still prefer an actual playmaker on his wing to take better advantage of the fact hes the best 5v5 goal scorer in the league. Majority of Matthews goals lately have come on the PP, he scores more 5v5 with Nylander on his wing.

Also spin it any way you want, you've created two 4th lines, which makes the Leafs much less dangerous in the playoffs.

Also like I said, you've over corrected our Defence. You talk about cap rising and re-signing all these guys. What was the point of drafting Liljegren and Sandin if you've got 6 dmen standing in the way? Not to mention the fact Rosen is ready for the nhl today, and Borgman is close as well, why gut our offence to block guys like that, even Dermott is ready for a promotion to the top 4, but he'd be wasted on the 3rd pair for years in this scenario.

Half of what will make guys like Moore successful is either playing against other 4th liners, or playing with better players. There's no guarantee 4 of your 6 bottom six players are NHLers let alone pencil them in to produce half decent numbers.

Baptiste can barely score in the ahl this year, what makes you think he'd be an effective 4th line with Goat as his C? I also don't really see Timashov playing in the nhl in anything more than spot duty.

We need one top 4 dman. Flip Kadri for one. Go with Rielly, Dermott, muzzin and guy you get in Kadri trade.

IMHO I don't really like any of these if I'm the leafs, except maybe Hyman for a 3rd. I think he could probably be replaced easy enough, and help save some salary. Also I think the cap is more likely to be $83M than $84M. Would probably want to consider dumping Zaitsev, as he could save some cap, and allow the leafs to have a full 23 man roster.

All great points, not to mention we've aged our core replacing Nylander with guys like Barrie/Larsson/Nieto, shortening or window to win.
