i've noticed and that is why i normally bust his stones almost immediately. there are a couple guys on here that have severe Buffalo goggles and it is comical watching what they suggest and write.
I was being serious when i said that the team you assembled is better on paper than the current team and I understand why you loaded the 4th line the way you did (jokingly). But honestly if you had Marleau as the 2c and moved Mitts down to 3c, it gives the team "some" depth that is currently non-existent. i like Eichel, he is an elite talent, but i don't think Eichel is a leader. buffalo hasn't had a true leader in years and adding guys that have been there would be beneficial to the team, regardless of age or skill level. guys like Williams, Marleau and Cally are valuable, especially on short term contracts.
buffalo is unfortunately in a position where they have to develop within and through trades because not many FA's are itching to go play there, especially since they have been awful for the last decade. with a core of Eichel, Dahlin, Reinhart, Montour, Mitts, McCabe, Risto and Ulmark - the team could be in good shape if they play their cards right, find the right trades and draft correctly. historically, buffalo hasn't had any success in drafts, which is why they are in the position they are in now.
Many people complain about the Leaf fans over rating their players, for the most part the Leaf fans are much more knowledgeable and fairer than Sabre fans on this site.
I adjusted the line as you proposed, and as you correctly presumed, I was trying to make satirical comment about the fourth line, but Marleau between Reinhart and Sheary could be the settling presence to bring out the best of both of the wingers. With Williams on the top line, he has the experience to get the most our of Jack, making that line much better. Then with Callahan on the fourth line adding that veteran leadership to an already solid shutdown duo, could only improve Larsson and Girgensons. An additional comment, I get to watch those two every game and while they do not have the scoring touch, they control the puck and start in the defensive zone nearly 85% of the time. Speaking of leadership, no one, absolutely not one sports writer has commented on how the team fell apart after Berglund left (read what a local Buffalo writer had to say
https://buffalonews.com/2018/12/18/patrik-berglund-buffalo-sabres-nhl/). The team was 20-10-5 (104 pts if projected over the entire season) before he left and 13-29-5 after. So for nearly half of the season they were 10 games over then the second half of the season they were 16 under. So as you said, maybe with the proper on ice leaders the team could actually compete with the Bruins, Leafs and other teams. I also think Benning and Hunwick while not top 4 NHL defensemen are not AHL either. Benning actually has a better +/- than Nurse, Larsson or Klefbom with a decent Corsi.
Things may be changing about playing in Buffalo. Hutton signed a very fair contract (I actually thought he may sign for more elsewhere, he may have picked Buffalo because he knew he would be the starting GK), and Skinner waived his NTC to play with Buffalo. I think Jeff came to Buffalo to play with Jack. Eichel seems to make any one who plays with him perform better.
Lastly, I am still shocked that no one commented on the trades. OMW, if Betterall could pull them off, he should get manager of the year. As you said a better team, with veteran leadership, rekindle the winning attitude and all on short term contracts as you correctly observed. Oh yes and seven first round draft picks over the next 3 seasons.
