I've been recently seeing a lot of Vesey-to-Edmonton trades out of NYR AGMs. Why? He's established himself in the league as a #3LW, hardly worth a 2nd Round Pick AND a 5th Round Pick. Edmonton is much better off just drafting a player at #38 if that's all the can get for a high second.

EDM needs scoring on the wing and Vesey put up 17-18-35 this year mostly playing on the 3rd and 4th lines. Put him with one of McDavid, Draistl, or Nugent-Hopkins and i bet he can up that to the 40-45 point range.

His underlying numbers suggest he MIGHT be able to bump his production marginally on a better line than what he's played with, but I have issues with this:

1. Every season he's played, even when the Rangers were still "good" in 16/17, has seen Vesey get absolutely lit up in terms of SF/SA. He's bordering on a career average of 2 shots against for every shot he takes. Is he lazy in terms of a 2-way game, or have the lines he's been stuck on been THAT bad his whole career?
2. This assumes Edmonton is paying for what you think he'll become. If he's been playing his career as a 3rd or 4th liner thus far, he should cost as much as a typical 3rd or 4th liner does. Teams, especially the Oilers, cannot afford to pay a "maybe" tax on their acquisitions. I'd be more comfortable with a 3rd or a 4th with a B-prospect.
3. If the Rangers haven't been good for two years or so, and are committed to a rebuild, what about Vesey's game has kept him buried in the bottom-6 when roster vacancies have opened up via trade? With skilled players being shipped out for picks and prospects, why hasn't he been able to establish himself as a 2nd line forward on a bad team obviously starving for scoring?

Also considering how bad Chiarelli was robbed in the Strome/Spooner trade, I'm incredibly hesitant to bet high on Vesey in addition to what I've brought up above. The Rags have conned the Oilers (read: asshat GM of the century) in the past. It's not a major basis for preventing this trade, but it has to be taken with a grain of salt.

1) Yes he used to bleed shots and be a complete one dimensional player, this has actually changed this year and he's even seen time on the PK. He's not going to win any selke's or be in contention, but he's much better than he used to be
2) You either hate or love vesey-- there is no in between. He's good for roughly 20 goals a year, on an edmonton team that struggles to score that isn't bad. He seems to need work on his year round conditioning-- seems to lose steam at times. Obviously with McDavid/Draist/RNH he has better playmakers than he's played with in the bottom six of the rangers, he could probably hit 25-30 goals and 15-20 assists with them.
3) He doesn't have as much as Buchnevich, Lemieux, Zucc( when we had him), Kreider, Chytil and won't have as much as Kravtsov/Kakko/Panarin if they are on the roster next year. He's just had better players (or ones with more potential) ahead of him.

Almost entirely in agreement on most of it.

He's had opportunities to slot up on the top two lines when injuries hit, and he did produce marginally well. But you are right, he is what he is...a big bodied, quality bottom 6 winger that could be a mismatch on the right line once he settles into his prime and he's utilized correctly. This is in no way meant to be a knock, the fact is every NHL team needs these players. So there is value with him, but I am not sure it's a high 2nd. I think he'd be better used in a package deal, the Rangers would squeeze more value out of him that way.

But the idea that he would play with McDavid...and this would augment his production...is just terrible lol. If he's playing with McDavid or Drai...the Oilers are having another bad season.

The Toronto deal, are they rebuilding? Why would they want lesser players and some 1st rounders? Cap problems aren't going to cause them to give away "now" players while their trying to make their cup runs.

It had lindgren included, which I went back and said it would more likely be a 3rd. But guess you aren't keeping tabs on my activity here. Nice dude.

Vesey's value is probably similar to that of Drake Caggiula. Not worth a 2nd.

He definitely has move value than Caggiula. Vesey has topped 15 goals in each of his first three seasons, Caggiula hasn't done it once. Looked better with the hawks but still doesn't mean they have similar value. Remove the EDM 5th from the trade and that is a solid deal for EDM.
