Offer Sheet

Initial Creation Date: May 1, 2019

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Carolina throws an offer sheet at Marner essentially moving them all-in. The first round picks are going to trend later in the first where you won't see a significant talent like Marner and given that the rest of the pieces are/might be there this makes some sense. The defense being signed to term helps this move. Aho value might be debatable. Ferland couldn't be re-signed in this scenario. Re-signed the same goalies to what I thought were close values. Let me know if I'm wrong. Made a cap-dump trade with Darling. Could be Detroit, could be elsewhere. For two years of a $3M cap hit on a buried guy that's good value. Didn't go through and sign all of the two-way/peripheral guys.

Obviously he'd have to sign it, but there are three outcomes. He doesn't sign, no harm done. He signs and Toronto doesn't match, Carolina gets a great player. Toronto does match and ties up ~$43M in 4 players before inevitably having to move Nylander so they can spend on defense or if not have little money to upgrade the back end.

Didn't really pay any attention to the lines.

Just for fun.

Detroit says OK we will happily take Darling! That would give Detroit 5 2nd round picks.

So you offer sheet Marner for 17,150,000 but he is signed for 12,250,000? And if Marner gets either of those 2 values, Aho is right behind him

reason for the offer sheet value is the contract is divided by the lesser of the contract length or 5 years. since he is signed for 7 years the formula is:
12.5*7=87.5/5=17.5

Aho will be signed before July 1st so that point will be moot

Hello??? The only way for a team to offer sheet someone is if they become RFA's...as in after July 1st. This post is an offer sheet post...

4 future 1st round picks from a fringe playoff team? Plus overpaying a player that doesn't help their cap when Svechnikov and Necas need new deals? Doesn't sound smart at all. But Toronto declines to match the offer and takes the picks. Then signs one of the big free agents available for less to replace Marner. Uses the extra cap space to improve the defence, oh and has 4 future 1st round picks that could very easily turn into lottery picks. Thanks for making the team more complete Carolina.

It's not smart to offer sheet Marner. The price of his contract and the compensation greatly exceed his value. Now if you wanna talk trade, that seems more reasonable. Starts with Pesce. Inculdes one of Svechnikov or Necas and a 1st round pick. Plus maybe a bit more. But you'd be dumb to offer sheet him

Would argue that as Svech, Necas, Pesce and Slavin get older they're going to get better. Add Marner who just put up 94 points to a team with a better defense and his production should stay in that range. At that point, I don't see them as a fringe team. I don't see Toronto being willing to trade him unless it's for a serious over-payment. Again, it's all just for fun.

team needs a serious upgrade at goaltender to be considered anything more than a fringe team. With Mrazek and McElhinney next year I could very easily see them missing playoffs again

As a Detroit fan, Mrazek is frustrating. If he could get out of his head he could be fantastic. The top of his game is Vezina quality, too bad he's as likely to be pulled as post a shut-out.

Strange that Marner gets a 12m contract from the Canes but Aho who has two seasons of exactly the same stats as Marner get 7mshakes head

Pretty similar stats sure. In this situation you'd have to sign Aho first. The offer sheet was always going to cost more. Might have to give Aho only 5 years to get the lower number.

The reason that so many think Marner deserves to 12m is the thinking he should get more /the same as teammate Matthews. So by that logic, Aho and Marner should be getting similar numbers.
