3-way trade with Vancouver and Vegas Marleau retires

Description
The Marleau trade is him retiring and then his cap hit being traded. Since the Leafs are going to have issues putting together a deal with his money owed. Ottawa takes the cap hit along with picks, and Marleau is free to sign wherever he wants, financial impact greatly reduced. You can't trade a caphit on capfriendly, so I'm doing it this way.

I think Vegas doesn't hate that trade as they get two guys who can play at the NHL level and save over 6 mil in salary. Vancouver moves two guys they wouldn't keep longterm and get a D they want and guy they can either flip for more assets or buyout. They might want more but I don't see either loss being dire for them.

I know Philly fans don't love Gudas and with their RD depth they'd probably be fine to get something for him. You could also wait it out and look for an expiring RHD at the deadline. Could be Gudas, Mike Green or similar.

They may sign another cheap UFA and start with Hyman/Dermott on LTIR, then bury that contract once they return. That's the small stuff but could happen. I could also see them trying to bring in another goalie to challenge Sparks in training camp, as long as the salary can be buried.

Why wouldn't Vancouver do the deal with Vegas directly?

why wouldn't Vancouver just make that deal with Vegas and get Miller? Zaitsev and Miller are pretty similar d-men and Miller has the better contract. Canucks are already getting Reaves as well and still only giving up Leivo and Biega. Toronto seems to be pointless to be included in this deal unless I'm missing something.

You can't do it on here because you can't do it in the NHL either. If Marleau retires, the Leafs are stuck with his full cap hit because he was over age 35 when he signed his contract. You're probably thinking of a buyout, which couldn't happen the way you describe because bonuses are pair July 1st and the deadline for a buyout is June 30th. Since he was over 35, the Leafs eat his full cap hit if they buy him out. The only really realistic solution is finding a team he'd like to play on with cap space to take him and work out a trade.

You just accidentally gave me an idea for Marleau. A lot of talk about not being to buy him out after jul 1st but you could mutually terminate his contract and he would be free to sign anywhere and leafs could pay the bonus.

What do you think about that @Bcarlo25 , so many loopholes in the cba lol.

I wondered about that after seeing Berglund just walk away from his deal last season and the Sabres got away with no cap hit penalty. I wonder how that works, because why couldn't a guy like Luongo not do that to not screw over his team if he retires.

They could mutually terminate his contract. If they do that, Toronto is on the hook for a 6.25 million cap hit, with absolutely no way out of it.

No, if Toronto pays the bonus trades Marleau and the team he is traded to terminates the contract.

Sorry I was a bit foggy on the details.

So this is circumventing the buyout period.

Toronto trades Marleau on July 1st after paying his signing bonus. The team he is traded to mutually terminates his contract. Marleau would then be free to sign anywhere.

I mean, maybe? I feel like if I'm Marleau's agent I'm telling him that there's a real good chance that the league wacks this down for cap circumvention.

Don’t think they can, unless he signs with the leafs. If he signs with say the sharks for 1m there has been no cap circumvented. My idea was not to sign him back to the leafs. He is clearly done here.

well, let's get one thing straight, they can call anything they want cap circumvention. The Kovalchuk contract broke no rules, but the league still said no.

So basically the Leafs give up Zaitzev and a 4th for Miller and the Knights get two fringe nhl players and a 4th for Miller, lol no chance

They could try I guess but there’s no cap circumvention. Avs have the full cap hit and terminate his contract.

I don’t see this happening. It’s a bit far fetched. I just like finding crafty ideas.
