DrouinJosi Swap

Created by: boyd1212
Team: 2019-20 Nashville Predators
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 12, 2019
Published: Jun. 12, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
NSH gets a young winger in Drouin, avoids a Josi extension that's too high given the other defenseman contracts and picks up a couple future assets. Subsequent trades clear cap room for Duchene signing.

Montreal gets a highly productive, puck moving defenseman (who has been very successful alongside Weber) that is still cheap for another year and on the right side of 30. Clearing Drouin's contract gives additional room to sign Josi to an extension

Without Josi that left side is simply not good enough.

Domi + 15th overall + Romanov for Josi and Jarnkrok. Youre gonna have to overpay to get him.

Having 4 elite defenseman hasn't got the job done for the Preds either so... time to try something different. Getting Drouin and clearing room for Duchene is a significant upgrade to the forward corps.

Its one of those that looks lopsided up front, I agree. Preds are banking on Drouin reaching his potential, but at minimum being no worse than the 50+ point player he has been. Plus, that Josi $4M gets at least doubled with his next contract.

Preds could get a much better player in a return for Josi I would think. Ellis would be a more comparable preds d in terms of value for a Drouin swap. But it's be sweet to see the Josi-Weber pairing again!

A better player today? Probably. But part of the angle is retaining enough cap space to both sign Duchene and keep Turris. Trading Josi for a better player likely carries a higher cap hit and Duchene goes bye bye.

If Josi’s contract negotiations go sideways, maybe. Until then, Subban or Ellis are the most likely candidates.

I just read an article that had the same exact trade for josi.
I think they would need to give the 2019 1st at least for josi. Josi would have to have an extension agreed upon

A number 1 defenseman and one of the top 10-15 defenseman in the NHL is more than "probably" better than Jonathan Drouin - who two teams now want to get rid of. He's a good player, but nowhere near as valuable to any team as Josi would be. I'd rather have Huberdeau (similar cap hit) or someone else if that's what you're looking at.

Huberdeau isn't a bad alternative given the similarity in cap hit.

I went with Drouin cause he's younger, and the assumptive ability to get Fleury (23 pts in the AHL at age 20) and a 2nd back in the deal.
