9.5 max ×7 or 8 years but that is on potential. He isnt as good as kuch or stone who are also wingers and not even close to matthews. Marner is a very good playmaker but goal scorers get paid more and marner doesnt really score a lot. He had something like 25 goals this year but so many were empty net and quite a few of his assists were on empty net goals to but that shouldn't matter too much.

JT has a history of making his linemates better like moulson or okposo and when was on the ice without JT the team only had possession 39% of the time. I think marner wants to play in TO but his dad and agent want him to be the highest paid on the team. His agent historically has his players hold out for more money and his dad is insane.

His agent has done a very good job of leveraging the offersheet and going through the media and it was nice to see dubas use the media to his advantage yesterday.

Comparing a bad contract to what someone should make is stupid. Okposo signed for 6 so reinhart should be making at least 8 million, right? No, you shouldn't compare bad contracts to what is fair. Skinner signed for 9 because buffalo has to pay more for players to go there.

It is a business and no one should be mad at JT. He almost had 50 goals last year. It is marner who is asking for way to much. He isnt worth near 11. He isnt close to as good as kucharov or stone. He isnt better then Kane who makes 10.5. We can talk about him all he wants when he is asking for at least 2 million more then he is worth.

Toronto cannot afford to have 4 players make up almost 50% of the cap. The argument wasn't that JT isn't an exceptional player worth $11M, the argument is that the team and its fan base should understand that they have to pay to play. by signing JT last summer, it put the writing on the wall for one of Nylander, Matthews and Marner. Now with 2 of the 3 signed, one has to be on the way out. saying he isn't close to Stone or Kuch is shortsighted and comparing him to Kane's contract that was signed 5 years ago isn't a valid argument, if anything, it proves that he is worth his ask. a keyboard warrior cannot even come close to determining his value. the guy put up 94 points last season, skin that cat however you want to, but all that means is that he names his price.

look at their cap percentages when they signed them. right now he isnt as good as stone or kuch and in the coming years when he improves his point totals will stop. at some point he will stop beating his career highs. the guy had his point totals were boosted by JT who has always boosted his linemates point totals. if you look at his comparables right now they would be Point, Rantanen and Aho for RFA's. for his contract max they shuld be stone and kuch ut I already went over that. all three of the RFA's are expected to sign for far less. Aho had more points, plays center and has better advanced stats as well. Point plays center, scores more goals and is also all around better will make less but thats because of how overblown the taxes thing is. rantanen didnt get as many points and is a winger but he isnt that much worse then marner. there definitely a 2-3 million dollar gap. he has used the media and the threat of the non existent offersheet to bring up his price.

The NHL is a stars league and the leafs have been able to build their team like so. if they didnt have two bad contracts in marleau and zaitsev they would have lots of cap space to sign their big players to contracts. the way dubas built the team was to have their stars play big roles and let the depth pieces signed for cheap fill in the rest of the holes. By no means were kapanen and johnsson big prospects. they developed them well and put them into a position to succeed and they did well. When chicago won their cups they had their stars but they fell of because of their age and they didnt recycle their depth players. they gave them to much money and had to give up good, cheep players like tarevinan(spelled so wrong). Players like tyler ennis are available for cheap. they can fill in holes and provide value. hyman drives play, they gave up a 6th for him and signed him to a cheap contract. Trevor moore is another good example. they found a guy who had all the tools but couldnt put it together so they developed him into a decent 3rd line winger who could end up playing a bit higher.

they dont need to be paying depth guys 2 million dollars when someone like ennis is available for league min. cheap, good depth is available all the time but star players like Matthews and JT dont come around often.
