SUBBAN- Does this make sense lets talk

Created by: Jambo
Team: 2019-20 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 21, 2019
Published: Jun. 21, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Barrie goes to NSH so that they can still have a dynamic D-man for this season, but relieved of his cap hit after the year to sign Josi. Essentially replaces Craig Smith's contract and allows them to pursue Duchene...Colorado gets Subban which speaks for itself, and also Smith for secondary scoring help, maybe he extends too you never know. Does the basis make sense? I didn't spend much time on the trade details and I'm sure the value is off in probably more ways than 1...but lets talk about it ! What would need to be added and would either team even think about it?

Doesn't make sense at all to me. Avalanche have Johnson and Makar (who will be their top pairing RD of the future), not to mention Timmins who could be a 2nd pairing RD someday. If the Avalanche move Barrie, it will likely be a hockey trade for a forward.

I see why Nashville would want to do it, but why would the Avs? If they were going to have 9m on the books next season for a Dman, why not just keep Barrie who will probably re-up for around 8m? Smith is a nice player but 9m in subban and 4.25m in Smith who is also a UFA. Just keep Barrie and sign a UFA.

Makes little sense to the Avs, all they have to do is re-up Barrie for less than Subban (who is older too), and chase a free agent instead of Smith (e.g. Nyquist, same age, similar if not better production). Handing Barrie to the Preds as a division rival is also a bad idea. The Avs have plenty of cap room to do both, so it's unlikely they help the Preds out of a jam.

Edit: Missed a word..

Subban and Smith for one year of Barrie? No, that does not make sense for NSH.

Cap relief is what NSH needs for sure, but I don’t think one year of Barrie is worth while for them. They have Ellis and Fabbro who could potentially be steady in the top 4 this year. If Subban is being shipped out, it’s going to be for a top six forward

It still doesn't. They could get better long-term assets than 1 year of Barrie for both of those players. I agree they need to shed salary, but I think there are better ways to do it. Barrie is great, but would be tough to lose Subban, Barrie, Smith within one year (assuming Barrie doesn't resign). I'd rather get draft expansion-exempt players, forward talent, or picks back for those two players.

im not saying its a good idea but I could get the reasoning behind them doing it..it would be weird, but you can see why if they just want to say eff it and lets get Duchene and not miss out on him for the 3rd time
