They 100% match that and it doesn't even screw them over because they already offered close to that cap hit, just with more years ?

Of course they match that. But then they have to compete with the open market in 4 years instead of buying several years of UFA eligibility.

They dont seem to understand that RFA is supposed to be team controlled spending for young guys. since offer sheets HARDLY ever happen anymore this would be a way for lou to absolutely pork toronto now (10.5m for an rfa is a major contract) as well as in 4 years when he leaves for no compensation.

Or worse yet, signs a 8-year deal in Toronto for $15M AAV in 2023.

Why is he leaving in 4 years?
Why is "Old boys club" Lou offer sheeting anybody?
The answer? Isles fans are still pissed about Tavares.

I'm not even an Islander fan. I just picked a team that had the necessary picks and enough cap space.

I'm not suggesting that he leaves in 4 years. However, Toronto would have to give him an even bigger payday in 2023 if they wanted to keep him, and that time they wouldn't get any draft pick compensation if they couldn't compete with the open market.

Maybe he doesnt leave in 4 years, but he 100% sounds money driven so best contract takes it, RFA status ends in 4 years so he would be a ufa and could leave if he chooses. Maybe he hates toronto? Maybe he wants to play for the sabres? Who knows. He could resign, but if he gets a 10.5m contract now right, and keeps up the production, he will want a raise. he wont take similar or less. In terms of why the isles? A) biggest rumored landing spot, B) Lou has cap to work with, is familiar with the player, and could use a 1st line rw.

Why cant they compete with the open market then? No more big time RFAs between now and then and the cap would rise, he'd get his deal before Nylander and Matthews too so if anything its those two that would feel the pinch.
Go offer sheet Point of something, the Leafs got this lol

the cap is 81.5 right now. it went up a total of 2m. Lets be optimistic here and say on average over the next 4 years the cap goes up 3m a year. so in 4 years theres an additional 12m to spread across the team. You will need a new goalie at that point. the only 4 players you will have signed are matthews, tavares, nylander, and zhaitsev. Those 4 would take up 1/3 of your cap room. Lets say salaries also go up over that period. 15m aav wont be unheard of for elite players. so you essentially want half your teams cap tied up in 5 players (we know toronto fans all want zhaitsev gone). nevermind two years later when matthews and nylander need a contract themselves? It isnt feasible to spend a large percentage on a few in a sport that has so much attrition. thats all.

Correct...for the Leafs it is getting worse and worse. They've done nothing to lock up anyone (Marner, Kap or Johnsson) or trade anyone besides marleau while giving up a 1st round pick.

Lol so they match, then magically still have enough cap space to offer sheet Barzal? I guess being rich means you can break the rules...right? No wonder Leafs, Habs, and Rangers have so many Stanley cups since the salary cap was introduced, i am right?!

We basically traded Tavares and 4 first round picks for Matt Martin, Leo Komarov and Mitch Marner. I'm sure they'd really consider that screwing toronto over :/

Ya because their cap is going to look the exact same next summer...
Cap goes up by 2mil, Muzzin's 4 mil, Browns 2.1mil is done. There's 8mil right there without any trades or other minor contracts.

I think you missed the point of this AGM. They're going to make this offer fully expecting Toronto to match to ensure that Marner becomes a UFA in 2023. Also, the compensation if Toronto didn't match would be two 1sts, a 2nd, and a 3rd, not four 1sts.

Yeah and having 4 forwards (Matthews, Tavares, Marner, Barzal) take half of your cap space makes sense long term...and I'm the one who is shortsighted? Give your head a shake
