They only have 6.9 in cap space your not trading away enough cap to afford the players your getting even if Marner accepts that low figure. And they have to carry 23 on the roster so your one short there as well

Unsure you can trade your 2021 1st round pick because of the conditions on the Marleau deal at this time, but i would do that deal with a full 50% retain on Kreider. Tim and a 1st would be a rock solid return.

pick can be traded. That just removes the conditions from the Carolina trade, guaranteeing them a 2020 1st no matter where its at. Regardless, it's too high of a price for 1 year of Krieder.

Don't the NYR trade but bridging marner allows the leafs to address the needs on Defence right now. But I have no idea how much marner is asking for on a bridge deal

I am 99% sure the way LTIR works is you only get one crack to go over. You can go over by up to that amount, but you don't get 5m million to add three players. Once you go over, you forfeit the remaining LTIR. What I am not sure about is the 10% and offseason order things can be done.

He is referring to Horton's LTIR, I believe.

Or you make the Rangers 1st also conditional if Carolina does get our 2021 the Rangers get our 2022 1st but it's likely to be our 2020 1st and yes a huge overpayment take out Lil

You're forgetting Horton's LTIR. The way it works is once the Leafs reach the upper limit of the cap ($81.5M), Horton is then on LTIR and the Leafs are allowed to exceed the cap by Horton's cap hit ($5.3M) so they currently have $6.9M + $5.3M (approximately) in cap space..

That is only partially true though. They have UP TO 5.3m, but if they go over by 1m signing Marner then they forfeit the remaining LTIR $. They have to do it with one player. They can't spend that 5.3m over on multiple players.

False. It doesn't limit the team to a number of signings. If the team adds another player, they have to have enough cap in the relief pool ($5.3M over the cap) to fit the remaining players. So if they go over the cap by $1M to sign Marner as you say, as long as the players they're adding don't exceed the remaining $4.3M in the relief pool, the Leafs are still deemed under the cap. Check out the LTIR FAQ headline for the full explanation

Ah, yes, I was mistaken, but I don't think you can't LTIR him now, or you don't get the additional space. You have to be up against the Cap.

The league upper limit is $69M. A team has an averaged club salary of $68M and a player with a cap hit of $5M becomes injured and the team places him on LTIR. The team is now permitted to spend up to a new limit of $72M:
Cap hit of LTIR player is $5M
Amount of cap space available to team = $69M - $68M = $1M
Amount team can exceed the cap = $5M - $1M = $4M
New limit = $68M + $4M = $72M

Technically he can be placed on LTIR right now but the amount of relief varies depending on when the player was place down on LTIR. Right now it makes no sense to place Horton on LTIR because teams are allowed to go 10% over the cap ($8.15M so spend up to $89.65M) during the off-season. Once the puck drops on opening night, Horton is placed on LTIR and they are cap compliant
