I think you are trying to make Nashville better, but I feel like New Jersey wins this trade hands down.

Remember when Nashville had the best defense? This defense looks awful now

Considering what they had? pk josi ellis and ekholm last season. Both ellis and ekholm will regress without josi and pk back there. Those are two top defense that they were able to work off of that they just traded away. Their point of strength is now their weakness.

For pk, josi and tolvanen they got hall, butcher and santini. that seems a little lopsided to me

yeah but they as a d core arent awful, not top in the league but certainly still serviceable

secondly you'd have to lump duchene in too because you had to dump PK's cap to turn your weakness into a strength, despite not being the top defnesive team, you're certainly a more dangerous team.

Also nashville always develops stars so it may not be too long until you get more top pairing guys

I don't think you can include a free agent signing in trades. They still have over 5 mil on cap space with the players that they took in the trade, they could have found a way to keep pk and sign duchene.

No they didnt, santini is 1.4 vs 9MM in cap hit savings of a duchene. butcher for 4 is significantly less than what Josi will be getting next year. True market value should be at a minimum 9MM per year. Now you have at minimum 18 million locked up on josi and subban, another 10 on ellis and ekholm.

So basically without healthy scratches and only 4 defenseman, you're at 76MM, where do you fit in a duchene?

you got cost savings of 9 (PK) and at minimum 5 (WB) + a depth defenseman with a modest cap hit, b prospect, and taylor hall recent MVP who can take over games, which is exactly what nashville needs and is looking for.

If the argument is you prefer PK over Josi, sure you could say you wouldve got a far superior return than what subban commanded, but then also you lose Roman Josi in his prime. Theres no scenario where they keep PK, Josi, & Sign Duchene, even with Duchene taking a discount at 8

Lol if they really wanted to keep him and sign duchene they could have, they could have traded smith or bonino, that clears up another 4. if you add santini's 1.4 to that you got almost 11 mil in cap space to sign a couple minimum contracts to be 13th forwards.

My point is they could have kept the d core together and still signed duchene

Sure, i hear that, but in those scenarios you still don't get hall cause you have the d core together, but then you've also dumped all of your depth. you would be in the same position as you are now, with even less secondary scoring and a marginally better powerplay. Management wanted to shake things up, and unfortunately PK was the most expendable long term

Oh yeah i had taken that trade completely off the table at this point. You can't get hall for nothing, although if things don't look like he's resigning i'd look for the usual pick player prospect deal. I just think trading both would be a mistake for sure even with hall coming back. I'm suprised they didn't try to land hall in the pk deal or atleast get a 2nd line wing.

Yeah i would agree that pk is more expendable than Josi for sure, it must be a locker room thing that he was traded again, i thought he was doing solid there.

Not so much a locker room thing, you have two top 4 D on unbelievably team friendly deals, you have josi entering his prime as an absolute stud and your team captain. Fabbro impressed and showed he can play top 4 minutes, and PK who's unfortunately on the wrong side of 30 now making $9MM another 3 years (I think he will have a phenomenal year this year, i think last year was a fluke, but in any case hes making 9MM on a team that has an elite defensive core even without him). For PK you wouldn't get much of a return because of the cap hit. However it's interesting to me because if they traded ekholm or ellis, they could have gotten serious help up front in exchange because of there contracts. But either way, goes to show why david poile is gm and I am not

We should have done a huge package trade with New Jersey, clearing space for Duchene & Getting Hall, Butcher, & other cheap pieces. sending PK Subban, maybe Granlund, and a nice prospect back to them such as Tolvanen. I could deal with a trade such as that but might not even need to pay that much as Hall doesn't have full interest in resigning with NJ so make it Subban, Grahlund, and a pretty good prospect (not being Tolvanen, Tomasino, or Fabbro) but something just a peg below them.

I was hoping that as well. When I heard it was subban to the devils I was thinking maybe hall so you can tell how disappointed I was lol
