Stone takes ~333k pay cut. Calgary gets to shift 1.166667 mil cap to next season. Borrowing from next year's cap. If there is a next season...

Can someone explain how signing Stone wasn't cap circumvention? I don't really understand how they got away with it.

The rule for resigning after buyouts only apply to cap compliance buy outs, Stone was just regularity bought out

Don't know if I'd call it genius. You did still end up with Michael Stone on your team.

It's legal lol, or else the NHL wouldn't have allowed the signing to go through

Stone is a perfectly capable RD he was just overpaid. I will gladly take him for 700K and know he will be significantly better then any of the current RD not signed (that would cost around the same)

So then why did the caps have to trade Orpik last year?

Its a pretty genius way to become cap compliant if a Tkachuk signing ended up pushing them over the cap by a mil or so. It would give them the entire season to make additional moves or let contracts expire to make them cap compliant again next year.

I know its not a huge difference but its a worthy one. IMO its totally cap circumvention but also within the rules.
