Unless the salary cap goes away by the TDL, no it wouldn't work. Blues are too tight against the cap to take on that much salary.

I doubt it. If Pietrangelo agreed to an extension in TOR and they gave us Nylander I'd be ecstatic. Look at every other trade deadline deal involving an upcoming UFA in the last few years... the best players received by the sellers were Brannstrom and Suzuki. To get a proven asset when the alternative is a pick and prospect... for sure I'd take Nylander for extended Pietrangelo if he's not gonna sign back in STL.

Agreed. But STL won't call Toronto saying : ''Dude, PIet wants out, but we'll take Matthews for it''. Toronto will call, and STL will try to get more especially if they PIet has agreed to extend there.
