Simple unexciting trades NSH OTT MIN

Description
Not thrilling for Leafs fans but let's face it: Johnsson isn't going to land us that top-4 dman without adding another key piece. I don't think it's worth shaking up the team or mortgaging the future to do that mid-season when the team has been playing well

I still think the Leafs should try to shore up their defensive depth, and while they don't need to trade Johnsson to do that, his return from LTIR makes it very difficult for the Leafs to add anyone, let alone fit a 20-man roster under the cap (especially with Muzzin out).

The alternative would be to move Ceci instead but I'm not sure the Leafs would find a taker and even if they did, it's nice to have him as an option if they suffer another injury on defence. Johnsson would fetch a nice package of futures from a team trying to make the playoffs and is altogether more expendable

Overall... decent

But I doubt they would trade bracco for a non high grade ufa defenceman. Not saying Demelo isn’t good but I think bracco would be an overpay.

That's a valid argument. Teams have to overpay for players at the deadline though and Ottawa will have plenty of suitors for DeMelo if they decide to trade him. They aren't going to trade him to a division rival for the same as what a Western conference team will offer for him either

Also... if you look at what other RHD's are available on lottery teams it is very slim pickings

Not to mention Demelo is easy for Toronto to fit under the cap, which is super helpful.

Nashville includes him to open a roster spot for Johnsson and he'd be an excellent addition on toronto with moore out. Better than marchment and plays a tough game

I'm good with that Nashville trade (from a Nashville perspective). Johnson can play up the line up or we could trade off one of Smith/Granlund and let him slot in there. Watson gets replaced by Trenin long term. No clue about Kivihalme but LHD prospects are welcome.

The NJD 2nd is going to be the rough equivalent of a late 1st rounder and next draft is a good one to have that.

You would also have to believe more defenceman will become available as we get closer to the deadline... and just because you are not a lottery team tanking doesn’t mean you know you won’t make the playoffs. There is different stages of bad lol.

But I do see your points. As for the whole trading within the division thing... that generally applies to people with term or if a team still thinks they have a shot. Ottawa knows they don’t have a shot this year and will just look for best deal regardless of team... if the draft goes well maybe they think differently next year.
