Pedantic, but only the team that owns the player at the TDL can sign a player for 8 years. For STL's sake, I hope they avoid 8 years but it is one of the advantages they hold.

Kinda why I traded for his rights, which if done allows the Leafs to sign him for 8

You can roast me if it happens, but am I supposed to be afraid of a team that has to make 5 trades and trust Jack Campbell as a starting goalie to sign Pietrangelo?

Rule 50.8, subsection (b) (iv), which states:

An SPC with a term of greater than seven (7) years, provided, however, that a club may sign a player to an SPC with a term of up to eight (8) years if that player was on such club's reserve list as of and since the most recent trade deadline. With respect to potential unrestricted free agents only, the ability to re-sign a player to an SPC of eight (8) years expires when the player becomes an unrestricted free agent.

My bad, didn't realize he had to be owned at the previous TDL

No your not, was simply pointing out all the salary that would need to be moved to sign AP, looks like a terrible idea from the Leafs POV unless of course hes willing to take like 8 x 7 , I can't see it

But Blues could sign him to the 8 years and then trade him to Toronto right?

Nothing wrong with Rittich as a starter, small down grade from Freddie but could live with it

It seemed plausible before they signed Muzzin, but now it just doesn’t really make sense

Exactly, he would be very very nice to have, but same concerns St Louis would have is length of term plus the AAV he has certainly earned would hand cuff the Leafs on the back 3/4 years of the contract

Not sure why Calagary trades Rittich and Bennett for Andersson and Kapanen plus a 1st. Rittich makes less than Andersson and has played better this year also

Cause it's a Calgary type of trade, it's what they do is trade and get worse

The Flames likely don't give up Rittich and a 1st and 2nd. As much as Andersen is the defensive corps for the Leafs, the Flames love Big Save Dave and he's likely their starter for the next few years.

Lucic Neal nuff said, also the point of the thread was to show how impossible it is for the Leafs to sign AP

One trade is all you need to discover a pattern of behavior by a team? Really? The Neal SIGNING was the worst part of that whole situation. They should never have signed him and actually are kinda better post trade. Lucic is putting up what Neal would have put if he continued on the Flames. But now there's someone on the Flames with size and experience pushing people off the puck in the playoffs. Also if Neal scores two more goals, then the Flames got Gustafsson for free because of that trade. They became a 1st in the West team after trading away Hamilton for Lindholm/Hanifin. Not sure if you have point.

Umm why the hell would we ever trade you Barby for a pair of meh players we don't need just so you can sign Petro away from us? Like how does one even manage to arrive at such a delusional notion? I'm baffled and fascinated.
