Full on Rebuild with CBO

Created by: BCAPP
Team: 2020-21 Los Angeles Kings
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 8, 2020
Published: Apr. 8, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
First off, yes Doughty and Kopitar are hall of famers (Doughty likely first ballot). But they're on the wrong side of their prime, signed for big money and the team is at the beginning of a rebuild.

Retaining on Doughty hurts a lot with 7 years left, so I'd try to take back a shorter term bad contract. Retaining on Kopitar hurts less as he only has 4 years left, and I don't think they're expecting to compete at best before the 3rd of those 4 years.

In regards to a report I heard last year of trading everyone but the two of them, that just seems silly. They're most valuable to win now or in the next couple years, not to a rebuilding team. Maximize they're value in trades.

Traded out essentially anyone over 26 of significant value.

Brought in plenty of bad contracts, but short term.

Retaining some cap.

Signed two UFA's to one year prove it deals for rebounding so no long term risks

Signed mid level D for mid level money just to put some experience in.

Use the pick capital to upgrade team in about 1 year when Turcotte is coming up to build core around Turcotte, et al

Honestly doughty has a higher chance of being a CBO than getting traded for good assets in my opinion. 11 million for an aging blue liner for like 7 more years is not a good recipe for success. I really like Drew as well but I honestly think if they had a choice, they should use it on him

Quick still has good athleticism and I think on a better team he could still serve as a great backup. However, he’s someone the kings should keep as he is a good mentor for Petersen

Kopitar isn't waiving for Buffalo, Nor is Doughty waiving for Edmonton. Neither are leaving LA.

Nope. Doughty is THE franchise player so chances of him getting CBO'd are 0.00% so try again. Also, according to the rest of the NHL players, you know, the people he plays against every night, Doughty is still top 4 in the entire league as best defensemen, try again.

The rebuild is half over lol. Nothing here makes sense. Blake already said they are building around Kopitar and Doughty and its working. So why would he trade them after they accomplished getting the best prospect pool in the league in 2 years? Vilardi, Turcotte, JAD, and Bjornfot are all likely going to be on the Kings next season. Quick is fine until Petersen is ready to be the starter.

This is very strange, but I agree with everything you just said.

There is no way he is a top 4 defenceman in the entire league. Josi, Pietrangelo, Hedman, Carlson, Makar, Hughes, Ellis, Slavin, Hamilton, Jones, Werenski, Mcavoy, Fox, Heiskanen, Provorov, and Theodore is just guys off the top of my head. All of those guys are better than Doughty right now if you gave me a choice.

Doughty is an elite defenseman on a terrible team at the moment. I don't know that I would consider him to be top four anymore, but he is certainly top 10. A lot of those guys on your list have strong supporting defensive teammates, while Doughty was playing with a bunch of bottom pairing and AHL defensemen all season.

Put Doughty on the Hurricanes and he's just as good, if not better than Slavin and Hamilton.

McAvoy? Lol he doesn't outscore Doughty and certainly isn't better defensively. When the rest of the NHL players including McDavid say he is in the top 4, he is in the top 4. They are the ones playing against him. Not you. Your opinion is irrelevant.

I don't care about Bobrovsky so don't change the subject. The deciding factor of Doughty not being top 4 is because you say he is not versus the NHL players that say he is? Just trying to understand this.
