I get that Trocheck gets to go home but he would be playing 3C in Pittsburgh. Not much logic there.

To be fair PIT has been looking for a while a 3C that is able to take the role of a 1C or 2C since both Crosby and Malkin tend to miss about 10 games a year. This way Trocheck would be ideal.

Also they might use Trocheck on 1RW if they believe McCann and Simon work better in the 3rd line...

Rutherford was actually pushing pretty hard to get Trocheck from Florida at the deadline so I can see him doing this

So we give up Johns for some late round picks AND take on Reimer’s contract? Johns is big, right handed, and affordable. I get that he has recent concussion issues and his contract is expiring, but if that’s all he’s worth (looks at Toronto’s needs) I’d rather just keep him

I like the idea of a Murray and Trocheck swap tho

From CAR's perspective, its not bad. The only problem is that we traded for trocheck because we need a 2C really badly, and Necas is not yet ready to take on that role. Also, that Murray contract is a bit of a risk for the canes, especially after the whole scott darling situation. That being said, goalies in recent history going to the canes have performed well (mrazek, reimer, cmac). Maybe if he signed a 2 year "prove yourself" deal the canes would accept. I do believe he COULD be a good fit though.

DAL is missing a goalie if Khudobin leaves, and Reimer's stats are actually pretty good for a backup. Adding a 3rd + 5th for a team that doesn't have that many draft picks in the first place shouldn't be a big issue, They're likely going after an UFA D anyway with Sekera and Polak walking...

Next year the situation might be something else though. I'd say their center issues are covered with either Necas, Staal or Bjugstad taking the 2C role. Not to mention there might be some good young guys debuting for the role, such as Geekie, Mattheos, Suzuki etc.

At the very least, I think goalies are more of an issue for Canes than their centers.

Finding a back up and replacing sixth/seventh defenseman isn’t uncommon or difficult. If Nill would stop giving up decent picks for overrated depth players we wouldn’t have a not many picks problem. We aren’t deep enough on the right side to be trading guys that can slot into the top four for draft picks. Core isn’t getting any younger. Oleksiak would make more sense with Harley in the system

I'd be fine with Oleksiak in this trade too, but it would be pretty odd considering DAL has already once traded Oleksiak to PIT, and they've also returned him once to DAL.
