The case for TB to do it:
- They get $5.9M in cap space that will allow them to easily resign there other RFA's Cernak, Sergachev, and Cirelli.
- They get a top prospect in Suzuki, who's rookie season (41 pts in 71 games) was virtually identical to Points (40 pts in 68 games).
- They get a top 10 draft pick.
- They get a decent prospect in josh Brook.
- No longer have to protect Point in the expansion draft.
The case for TB not to do it:
- Point is a big part of the team and they know what they will get from him. Will Suzuki be able to progress and replace him?
The case for MTL to do it:
- They get the best player in the deal at this time.
The case for MTL not to do it:
- Point is 24 yrs old and in his prime, while Suzuki is only 20 years old and hasn't scratched the surface yet.
- The team hasn't made the playoffs in 3 years, is replacing Suzuki with Point going to push this team over the top? If not, is it worth taking on $5.9M when they need to re-sign Gallagher, Petry, Tatar, Danault and Armia who are all UFA's. Would they not be better off keeping there 20 year old top prospect and there top 10 pick and staying patient?
- Have to protect Point in the expansion draft.
Credit to blanche for the trade and DirtyDangle for the debate.
I’m not high on Brook, Suzuki looks good, and a top 10 pick in a deep draft is great. I guess another 2 years of ELC in Suzuki would be enticing to Tampa but I still think they say no

Brook will likely become a reliable number 4 d-man
Plus Tampa could get a guy like Raymond or Perfetti which would be great for them
MTL could want this to get their offensive star, because no disrespect to KK, Caufield or Suzuki, but I don't think any of them has the potential of being an offensive star. Point is that and will be that for the next decade or so
Considering TB's current situation, I think they're the top cup contender at the moment from the entire league. I'm not sure TB should be moving one of their most important players at their current state.
If I were TB, I'd consider offering Mikhail Sergachev for Cale Fleury and that 2020 1st round pick
13 points in 60 AHL games isn’t encouraging. Not sold on him
The guy is only 20 year old. He won't be an NHL regular until at the very least 21-22, maybe even 22-23, give him time. Same goes for Liljegren in TOR. If he needs one more AHL season, then so be it
What is so good about brook?
He needs to prove something before his value goes up
What's so good about him? Currently the guy is developing to the pro game. He still is 20 years old, needs at least 1 year and a half in the AHL to be even close to making the Habs. I wouldn't be shocked to not see him in the NHL until the 22-23 season tbh

Agree with both sides of this one. Brooks value is likely very low right now. But he did have a monster year in the WHL before coming to the AHL. He needs time to find his game and work on the defensive side of things in Laval, once he gets more trust from the coach he should put up a lot better numbers.
i'd rather point than suzuki and a 1st. brook is only a so-so throw in.
I think it's easy to say that right now. 2 years from now, would you still think the same thing?
In the end does it matter to TB what happens 2 years from now or are they all in to win right now? For MTL, what it looks like two years from now is everything in my opinion. Which is why I am 100% against this trade from MTL's side.

yea i think i'd still rather point. he'd only be 26 in 2 years times.

And in two years, will he be better than Suzuki + Top 10 pick + Brook + the guys you were able to keep with the extra $5.9M in cap space you could utilize for two years?
That's the question, it's not just Point will only be 26.

yea probably. i don't think brook is going to turn into anything. the difference between suzuki and point is worth the $6m.
