Habs agressive stunners Price to COL cap space for Barzal OPTION 1

Created by: nilees24
Team: 2020-21 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: May 16, 2020
Published: May 16, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
For the Habs to improve on offense & defense they'll have to give up their crown jewel in net. And yes, for the Habs to re-sign pillar players long-term (Gallagher, Danualt, Suzuki), their only option is departing with Price and his $10.5 million annual cap hit. Sakic is in need of a goaltender with a high pedigree, Price would waive his no-trade clause for a Cup contender in the Western Conference. MTL can ride Francouz and Crawford as BRIDGE goaltenders until Primeau is ready to go for the 2022/23 season. Give them both 40 games each and find out which one is good to go for a playoff run.

*Hey Price haters, Carey Price is regarded by players and GMs as the best goaltender in the world right now* Avs have too much cap space, they'll gladly take his remaining contract in full. This trade should make COL a cup contender for the next 3 yrs.

Both NYI and CBJ have cap troubles for next season ..... caused by a flat salary cap ($81.5 mill). Not enough money avail for Lou and Jarmo to entertain signing they 1st line centremen to lengthy contracts (Barzal and Dubois, respectively). MB should consider an offer sheet should the trade fail. 5 yr / 52.5 mill ($10.5 mill/yr) should do the trick.

Projected cap space - (81.5 mill salary cap spikes to 84.5 mill for 2021/22)

Word out of Montreal is Ilya Kovalchuk is a lock to return (likely 1 yr/3 mill deal with performance bonuses). Feeling is Tatar, Kovalchuk, Weal are not affordable to re-sign for 2021/22 season (unless Drouin is traded in 2021-22). All other UFA's/RFA's at start of 2021/22 (Gallagher, Danault, Petry, Armia, Lehkonen, Poehling, etc.) can be resigned at fair market value (total cap hit for top 23 players just under $82 mill for 2021/22 season).

2021/22 Contract Offers (UFA's/RFA's):
Gallagher 6 yr / 43.5 mill (7.25 mill/yr.)
Danualt 6 yr / 36 mill (6 mill/yr.)
Petry 4 yr / 22 mill (5.5 mill/yr.)
Armia 4 yr / 16 mill (4 mill/yr.)
Lehkonen 4 yr / 14 mill (3.5 mill/yr.)
Poehling 2 yr / 1.7 mill (850k/yr.)
Caufield 3 yr / 2.775 mill (925k/yr entry-level deal.)

Actually he have negative value just one cap friendly! He was viewed by the Players has the best goalie in Nhl in a survey. With over 50 % of the vote. It was the same with the Gm that took the survey he was still at the top of the list but with a lowest % of the vote around 39 % i think. So no he doesn’t have negative value. Sure Montreal would have to take back some salary and retain a portion of it but they would still get a good return since he still one of the best in the game.

Gonna be awkward if they use a CBO on him.

all stats point to that fact the he is objectively not. you're a homer

saying someone is the best is strictly subjective ... if the majority of players/Gms think he's the best, than he's the best and that all that matters in this messed up crazy world lol..... Let's be clear, if he's in COL his SV% GAA and shutouts will improve.

And why would they do that? The Habs where a terrible team this year and when he wasn’t in goal its was just awful. They average over 1.25 gaa more when he wasn’t in net and they had a collective .890 save pourcentage without him. Even if is number aren’t looking good he was the only reason this team wasn’t battling with Detroit and Ottawa for the last place.

If they trade Price, they have ability to improve on offence/defense + cap space to re-sign pillar players in 2021/22 .... that's more valuable than Price. His highest trade value is right now .. or at least this offseason.

Based on what? MTL was one of the best teams this year in terms of controlling the flow of play at 5v5. They ranked higher than COL in CF%, FF%, xGF%, SCF%, and HDCF% and on the defensive side of those stats, the two teams were quite comparable. So how can we expect to see improvement that is anything more than marginal? And why would Colorado gamble on that marginal improvement when they have to take on an awful contract to do so and already have a solid goalie tandem? This makes zero sense for the Av's.

they are rare unicorns. MB's an aggressive hombre (Subban trade, Aho offer sheet). Itchy trigger finger ... could be too stressful financially for NYI

Bergevin is so aggressive he presented Aho an offersheet at market value - don’t know how he goes from giving Aho an offersheet for 8.454 to 10.5 for barzal with the same term. Seems pretty unrealistic to me.

yeah there wasn't enough meat in that Aho offer sheet. He learned a lesson. $10.5 mill is a fair offer sheet for Barzal. Forces Lou to trade players (maybe 2 large contracts) in order to match. Approx $8 mill cap deficit (maybe Leddy and a +4 mill FWD to be moved). To stressful, just take KK at a low price and see what happens.

I wouldnt trade barzal for kotkaniemi and a 1st. One thing people on this site don’t get is GM’s aren’t going to present an offersheet to another team to f*ck them over - they’ll only do it if they feel if it’s In the best interest of their team. 10.5 x 5 is a bit steep for Montreal , and add 2 unprotected 1sts it’s kind of risky. Weber + petry are getting older, price was below average this season. Given Bergevin conservative approach, it’s highly unlikely he offers that much.

The Isles have 9 players with contracts that have cap hit of $5 mill or greater for next season. Let's assume Pelock fetches north of $5 mill (unlikely bridge deal candidate- Toews likely to get bridge deal). That's 10 contracts north of 5 mill. Now your facing a $10.5 mill monster for Barzal. Way too much money invested in big contracts. The compensation package is level 2 (2 1st + 1 2nd + 1 3rd). Maybe something to consider.

You’re confusing what’s most likely going to happen and what you want to happen.

In a worst case scenario that barzal gets 10.5 mill, they will trade Leddy (he’s getting traded whether barzal gets an OS or not) and trade bailey and replace him with someone on an ELC. They will also buyout clutterbuck. That will make them cap compliant.
