It intrigues me why you insist on comparing Johnsson to Strome. Regardless, the bottom line is that Johnsson has 3 years left on his contract at a AAV of $3.4 million. A young top-6 winger who just last season, his first full season in the NHL, scored 20 goals, is worth significantly more than a 3rd and JP. If you cannot understand that, then I really can't help you any further. Now, I will let you dream of the return for Ryan Strome.
It's a natural comparison. Both of whom have been rightfully flagged as having the vast majority of their success due to having elite linemates. The difference is that Strome has performed significantly better. If you can't at least see that point then I'm not sure this is worth discussing.
I mean it's tough to come up with other comparables for Johnsson because players usually play significantly better when they finally get to play with elite linemates (Reinhart/Olofsson/Skinner with Eichel, Lindholm with Gaudreau, Dylan Strome with Kane). But that's not really the case here, Johnsson's offensive production in the context of his linemates is similar to more defense first players. We're talkin guys like Tom Wilson, Zack Kassian, or even Zach Hyman. In a way, Johnsson's profile is like if you took all the physicality and defensive prowess away from Tom Wilson and just had his offensive ability. That's Johnsson.
If you're more of a fan of goal scoring and need comparables, it's tough to look past Jimmy Vesey, 3 years of around 16-17 goals despite being on the 3rd line and PP2. Now it's tough to say how
many more goals he'd get than 20 if he had Johnsson's line mates. but it's not tough to say that he'd easily surpass that.
But yeah I mean enjoy him while he's young... I mean 26 lol.
