Easy no from Buffalo. Couture is too old and a little overpayed.

He’s a good target for the Sabres but not for 7OA let alone a +.

It could be as low as 10th, and he has years of productivity left in him

And could be as high as 1st. In your scenario you drafted holts. I’m not trading an 18 year old Holtz for a 31 year old couture.

I based my reasoning off your assumption of drafting holtz. If I’m Buffalo, I’m not trading an 18 YO holtz and Mitts who has struggled but has potential, for a 31 YO couture who’s still talented but def has seen better days

He had a decent season, was cut short by injuries, and before that came off of a career high season

7oa + Okposo + a B prospect for Couture and Sorensen? Gives Buffalo a solid 2-way 2C with a leadership presence and a defensively skilled depth guy. Sharks take on Okposo's contract for the next 3 years as they retool and it ends at the same time Meier needs his raise. This also leaves enough cap space to pay Dahlin and Joker

Couture would probably block any trade to Sabres.

Couture is in his prime and has 2-3 prime years left where his contract is fair and 3-5 good years after that where he will be overpaid so I see him as a hard to move player unless a team is desperate to win in the next few years. Buffalo might be if they want Their star happy but this would be a bad trade for them.

I get that. He’s still talented. I just feel holtz at rookie min and mitts at a low value is better then 6 years off 8 per. The contract will eventually not be great

I would do mittelstadt and a lottery protected 1st for couture.

He will be 39 when his contract ends at 8 million per

That 4-ish good years you will get out of him will be worth it especially if you can make the playoffs any of those years, which at some point you have to do

There’s multiple reasons to not do it that I’ve already mentioned, but the one that’s key is not sending any salary back that would kill Buffalo. They wouldn’t be able to afford Joki and Dahlin.

He’s only got one year left. There’s just a lot of small reasons that Buff doesn’t like this that I think add up to a pass. You could live with one or two of them, but all added up it’s not as appealing

Sabres can keep 1m Middlestat, and the first round pick and have eight million in cap instead of Couture. That's why the Sabres don't make the deal. Keep the pick, and spend 8m better than Couture.
