  2. 2021 2nd round pick (MIN)

  1. Jost, Tyson [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Minnesota get a young and cost-efficient 2C/3C. The price is reflective of what it would take to acquire him within the division.

COL
  1. 2020 2nd round pick (FLA)
  2. 2020 3rd round pick (COL)

DET
  1. Kamenev, Vladislav [RFA Rights]
4.
COL
  1. Komarov, Leo
  2. 2022 2nd round pick (NYI)
Additional Details:
Avs have excess capspace, which can be weaponised for a pick. The 2nd year of Komarov's $3m is what makes this so expensive for NYI.

Komarov brings experience and grit and can still be useful in a veteran 13th forward role, while filling in occasionally on the 4th line and PK.

I like it except for the Jost trade (I think you already know my opinion about Jost from other threads so im not going to go into detail but I think COL should keep him unless they get a very high end winger)

If we get offered 2 2nd's for Jost it would be silly not to take that offer. That's 2 top 45 prospects who would help fill out the roster on ELC's from 2023 when Mackinnon's new deal kicks in.

In order of priority our roster needs are:

      - 2nd line forward
      - 2nd pairing RHD (to push Johnson down to the 3rd pairing as he gradually declines in the next 3 years)
      - Elite 3C (ideally for 1 season since Newhook/Bowers join the team in 2021. This is more of a luxury though as Compher is decent at 3C).

In terms of prospects, our order of needs are: RD > forward > LD > C > G.

The issue with adding a top 6 forward is that we need to be mindful of Makar/Landeskog/Grubauer/Timmins needing contracts in 2021. Ideally we can get a top 6 guy on a 1 year deal. Or failing that a 3 year deal (until 2023 when Mackinnon's new deal happens) would also be good.

Is Grubauer staying his current deal??
What's his new deal if he does?

How about taking Sutter on his expiring deal? He's a better, more valuable player than Komorov and can actually contribute to winning. Play him at C or RW.

Yeah. According to a recent article in the Athletic Colorado has the best goalie tandem in the league, so there's no reason to move Grubauer. He'll stay the length of his contract. Whether he stays or not depends on how he does between now and 2021. He'll likely get between $5-5.5m if he keeps up his solid play as our starter.

The ED is also an important thing to consider. We may try to use the "ufa loophole" to keep both our goalies, by "exposing" Grubauer as an UFA and then resigning him ourselves on July 1st.

What would you be willing to add to move Sutter's cap hit?

His caphit is considerably higher than Komarov, but only 1 year which potentially makes it acceptable.

No thanks. Nichuskin is our team's best defensive forward and his offense also isn't that far off from Virtanen's. We don't need a small puckmoving Dman like Stecher either as we already have Girard, Makar, and soon Byram and Timmins.

That's correct. But the thing is that if we're trading assets for players in those positions then the player(s) we acquire need to be upgrades on what we currently have. Virtanen and Stecher wouldn't bump Donskoi or Johnson.

Sutter wouldn't really be considered a cap dump in the same way Komorov would. He's still capable of contributing on a winning team in a defensive role. I wouldn't expect much back for him (maybe a 5th) but I don't think we'd have to pay to move him.

But moving Roussel or Beagle is another option. Both have the same contract as Komorov but are much better players.

In this AGM Colorado wouldn't really need a guy like Sutter. He'd be getting in the way of Kaut who we want to give icetime to. The point was more to weaponise the excess capspace to pick up a nice asset.
