This Rebuild Will be Long and Painful

Created by: Leafs_and_Sens_Fan
Team: 2020-21 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 18, 2020
Published: Jun. 19, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This team has too many bad contracts. Trade any player you can get value out of and take on bad contracts to accumulate picks.

This team finishes below Detroit in the standings. Their 1st line is a legitimate 3rd line on most other teams and it just gets worse from there. The cherry on top is the goaltending.

After 4-5 years of picking in the top 4 this team should be back on track.

SJS need a guy like Rossi or Raymond more than another offensively talented RHD. But yeah probably an overpay for the Sharks.

Thank goodness you aren't a GM... Sharks overpay in every single trade except the Buffalo one.

Why on Earth would would Edmonton reject? Neal costs almost 18 million over the next 3 years and 12 million over the next 6 years is bought out. Marleau costed 6.25 and needed a 1st to get rid of.

So Neal costs a 1st and a 2nd to get rid of minimum. You change the 2nd to a 1st to get Kane.

Do you know who Meier and Merkley are? I have no bias. I'm not even a Sharks fan.

Meier half retained gets you Cirelli and 2 Tampa 1sts.

Realism aside, I would do that ANA trade, I LOVE Meier, I'd be willing to give that 1st, he's a legit 1st liner, would help the team a ton, plus Merkley on top, I still believe in him

It's not that hard to believe in him. He's been pumping out crazy numbers in the OHL. Meier at 3M is a complete steal.

If any team is overpaying it's the Sharks.

People on this site think every 1st is like McDavid when in reality only 50% of 1sts do anything meaningful in the NHL.

kane's contract is horrible, I would rather pay two first to get rid of neal rather than take more salary and term

why would a rebuilding team trade away a top 5 pick. They wouldn't. Odds are they get a much better player.
Hell for all you know that pick is a 1OA-3OA. No protection.
It's a bad trade for a rebuilding team.

Yeah ok, is that why you are defending every one of these bad deals?

Hell don't even get me started on that awful BUF trade. No team is taking that Valsic contract. It doesn't matter who you try to attach to it. It's not worth it.
2 years for a 6 years at $7,000,000 on a cap dump. Helllllll nooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

Yo i mean if they're trading off Meier I'll take him without Merkley for the (likely) 9th OA

He's always had attitude issues (supposedly) and has never been a strong defender (which I also think is somewhat overblown, but he is a risk)... Meier at six is a a...

Yeah...

I think the lowest was like 70% of making the NHL... And that was 20 to 30... This pick is 7... 100% chance at playing 100 games+ this being an absurdly strong class, any top 10 pick does have organization changing potential

Going scorched-earth on the roster is a great way to destroy the team culture, especially when you're acquiring a bunch of guys who just don't care anymore (Neal, Eriksson, etc).

You should hold onto Hertl and Meier for now. If you're doing a full rebuild then you may as well hold onto Vlasic for another couple of years as a veteran leader instead of stapling him to a good asset.

While i don't disagree that this team needs some sort of retool, trading away Meier Hertl Kane and Merkley isn't going to help.

If you retain 2 mil on Couture then I'll consider it, Okposo's contract is bad, but so will Couture's at 8 mil once he's 34+

Since when do rebuilding clubs acquire worthless assets? Okposso, Eriksson and Jack Johnson do the Sharks no good. And all pretty much have negative value. If Anaheim and New Jersey are in the lottery there's noway they're moving those picks.
